OK, I'm so totally and truly fed up of winter, and snow and ice now...so am cheering myself up planning what lovely veg I'll be planting this year!
Tried veg for the first time last year, with varying success LOL
Aiming to do better this year!
So my plans:
Lettuce (but not as many as last year!)
Spring onions
Spinach ( with hopefully more success this year!)
Peas - lots more than last year!
Runner beans
French beans
Tomatoes
Callabresse
Leeks
Courgettes (they were great!)
And hoping that my strawberries re-appear....(think they're meant to artent they???)

Also planning on stuffing various borders full of lovely pretty annuals....

Now...just need the snow to go so I can actuallysee the ground again...then to geton with digging in the overwintering green manure that I still havent dug in OOPS!

Oh and also cant wait to see my little Daff and Tulip bulbs springing into life in the front garden....

So what are you gonna plant this year??

i love courgettes, but must admit they were wearing a bit thin after a while as we had a bumper crop still have jars of marrow chutney left...

cauliflower
broccoli
runner beans
definitely pumpkin this year
artichokes
we are planting the asparagus, though this takes up to 3 years to pick apparantly
courgettes
leeks
onions (hopefully bigger this year)
beetroot
broad beans
sweetcorn
potatoes
carrots
lettuce
cucumber
tomatoes
garlic
shallots
butternut squash
brussel sprouts
radishes
red cabbage
white cabbage
kale
parsnips

we planted some raspberry canes a couple of years ago and they have all had berries on them last year, so can't wait for this year. someone gave us a golden variety and it is amazing.
blackcurrants
rhubarb

sweetpeas
marigolds
going to try and cultivate some mistletoe on the apple tree
dalias - planted them too deep or upside down last year and they never came up

i will be growing a lot more garlic this year as well. my stash lasted me almost the whole year and the taste was so different and a lot more intense than shop bought garlic.

we just spread the manure and haven't dug it over yet either hoping ds can borrow a rotervater as well this year as our parsnips and carrots were completely deformed and bordering on rude

If I'm really lucky I might get an allotment this year. Last year was the first vaguely successful year here, though I must be the only person in the world who failed to get a single courgette off my courgette plant. Luckily DH planted one which did well. I got a fair few seeds reduced to 50p from Wyevale which should keep me going. Am going to plant:

Mange tout
Courgette
Peas - lots more than last year
Runner beans - a salmon pink one and hestia in a pot
Tomatoes - variety, loved Golden Queen last year.
Aubergines- had some very pretty mini green ones last year
Tomatillos
Cucumber
Chillies
Peppers (chillies & peppers DH's dept.
Melon (got one small one last year but do have a green house to put up for this year.
Strawberries
Raspberries
Blueberries
Apples
Blackcurrant

If we get an allotment will do a fair few more.

This year am going to experiment more with cuttings. I have two new climbing roses from one outside the window to plant somewhere and am going to decide what else to have a go at.

We've got a teeny garden that is mostly flagged over (and we can't did up cos it's a rental property and the landloard wants it kept flagged). Last year we had an OK crop of tomatoes. This year I fancy potatoes in one of those potato tub things. Anyone had any experience of them?

I tried spuds in a hessian sack and it wasn't very successful, blight struck and it all seemed like a lot of work for not many spuds. Have decided to concentrate more on crops that are expensive to buy. However, this lack of success might have been because I was rubbish and others might well be along to say they had spuds coming out of their ears.

wow...am impressed with you lot!!

i have little success, but persevere anyway.

i have just got geranium seeds....all i have is a little plastic greenhouse thing, and the windowsills.

last year i just did the flowerbeds...but the boys, baby, balls and bunnies wrecked it all,so its being dug over and having big planters for now

whoever said they are growing melons....how do they work? are they good? very interesting

We have only got a small garden, but I am pleased with whta we grew last year. I definitely want to grow potatoes again. I'm going to do a couple of tomato plants. I went overboard with them last year and some went to waste.
I had lots of nicotinias last year and they were beautiful and long lasting, so I recommend them. And I do like marigolds because they keep going after most things have finished.
I did try peppers last year, but didn't succeed.

I've tried melons in my conservatory the last couple of years, IloveTIFFANY. I put two plants in a growbag and train them up a trellis thing and I've had about 4-6 melons from 2 plants both years. The melons themselves have been rather disappointingly small (approx tennis ball to grapefruit sized) but quite tasty. There are always a lot more flowers that don't set - you have to pollinate the female flowers with the male ones, which perhaps I don't do very well. Although some of the varieties do say you can grow them outdoors, I doubt they would do very well in the UK. I probably won't bother again once my seed packet has run out or the seeds in it fail to germinate.

Iklboo, I did potatoes in bags last year for the first time (normally grow them in our fairly large veg patch), and they worked brilliantly. In fact I did FAR too many, as they all had an excellent crop, but on the other hand, we're still eating last year's haul, and I've hardly bought any potatoes all winter.

My advice would be to make sure you water the bags really well, though - you need to saturate them pretty much every day. I thought I'd been watering them well and still found that the bottoms of the bags were almost bone-dry (though you also have to make sure not to over-water them )

We've got a big allotment so lots of space. We grow the "standard" stuff but this year I'm also going to be trying

Seakale
Globe artichokes
Chinese artichokes (weird little things, totally delicious but you can't get them anywhere)
Mushrooms
Grape vine - muscat of Alexandria in our greenhouse
Asparagus bed
Alpine strawberries
Padron chilli pappers for tapas
Raspberries
Melons again (grew one sucessfully this year so will grow more)

I'm giving my garden a complete revamp, and am planting almost the entirety of the J Parker catalogue.

Viburnum bodnantense dawn
Nerine
Campanula glomerata
Echinacea mixed
Aquilegia mixed
Lupins mixed
Pulsatilla mixed
Powder puff dahlias
Dianthus mixed
Dwarf lavender ? Munstead
Lilac
Monarda red burst
Aquilegia Black Barlow
Eryngium
Agastache black adder
Scabiosa blue
Salvia Nemerosa
Kniphofia
Verbena bonariensis
Chrysantha silver princess
Gaillarda
Astilbe Pink
Rudbeckia Goldsturm
Phlox
Gypsophila
Solidago
Liatris
Pyrethrum

That doesn't include the veg I'm gonna plant! Got a load of strawberry plants I did last year that should really come into their own this year, then I've also got a load of carrots, sugar snap peas, sweet peas and tomatoes to plant as well

No greenhouse here, so mainly flowers rather than veg.

I am so excited about it - it's great at the moment seeing all the bulbs I planted coming through. I only got the gardening bug at the end of last summer (when 6 months pregnant) so I'm really looking forwards to it.

My growing from seed last year was an almost total flop. But I'm going to a seed swap tomorrow and hope springs eternal .....

Definitely won't be growing aubergines, as without a greenhouse they're just slug food! Will be looking for weird interesting heritage varieties. I like purple and orange tomatoes.

Well, we are NOT doing pumpkin this year. We ended up with 3 giant pumpkins and one enormous plant that covered the whole veggie plot.

Just got inspired to shove our old metal dustbin over our rhubarb to force it. Never done it before. Our rhubarb is ridiculously vigorous - more like a gunnera so it'll be fine.

runner beans - ones with purple flowers
broad beans - funny red ones
sugar snap peas
carrots - funny mixed colour
stripey tomatoes
golden tomatoes
purple cauliflower
golden courgettes
sweetcorn
some red early potatoes that I'm going to grow in pots
golden wonder potatoes
hot pepper mix

Can you tell dd was helping me choose which seeds to buy?

This year we have taken out our summer raspberries as they were getting very very pathetic. I'm putting the beans there to put some nitrogen back into the soil and raspberries will go in there next year. We still have our autumn raspberries though and a gazillion strawberry plants.

oh and salad leaves - am trying seed mats this year as a bit of a cheat. I don't always recognise salad leaves and I'd like to prevent a re-occurrence of the infamous poppy poisoning of 2008!

Report
taffetacat · 06/02/2010 20:28

I grow my salad leaves in troughs as I wouldn't have a clue if I picked something else probably.

I sowed broad beans, sweet peas, red veined sorrel, chillis and peppers today. Next week I want to try laurentia and a few other flowers. I adore lambs lettuce so this year will try to remember to successional sow it as I am hopeless at this and end up with gluts and famine.

I am very excited about the summer - I have florence fennel seeds for the first time this year

Report
OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2010 20:58

I've never heard of florence fennel

days like today help me remember that spring is around the corner and when it arrives and I can work properly in the garden it is like coming to life again.
