Pumpkins- I have the seedlings - what now?

I've just found this topic (after being on MN for years ) and I'm thinking "Garden" now.

I bought a tray of Jack O' Lanterns from Aldi a couple of weeks ago.
I tried last year to grow pumpkins from seeds but nothing Sad

These are about 5" high now. Still in their original pots, I'm feeding and watering, but I need to get them out soon.

I read some information, I need a 'heap' of soil and they'll grow long vines (and take over basically)
I want to harvest them for Hallowe'en (I don't expect them to get big, but my plan was a pile of small decorated pumpkins rather than those monsters )

So..... where to site them. How close together?
When to plant them (I'm in Essex) and what to feed them with. Do I pinch them out (assuming I get that far) or just let them wander. I know I might not get all three to flourish, there were 4 but one got snapped off in transit DD fault

TIA Thanks

Oh lovely! We had 20+ last big fruit year, from maybe 6 plants.
I'm only 75 miles north of you or so.
There is a lot of info online for planting out in England, not usually until June.
We never fed ours Blush.
They need regular watering in summer if it's not often raining where you are.
It's not too late to buy a pack of seeds & try growing your own.

Thank You

20+ from 6 plants Smile I might get maybe 3 per plant ( I would rather have more smaller ones for decoration purposes so I'll need to see when /if they flower)

I have a batch of homemade compost brewing and if they're going to grow 6'-10' that would solve the problem of what to do with our raggy looking bit of garden . DH can make some large raised troughs (he keeps a good supply of Bits of Wood ) and I could plant them there.

Sometimes it helps to hand pollinate them. Good luck.

Grin
I have 5 largish pumpkins brewing and about 6 more flowers in bud.
(When I say 'largish' the biggest one is the size of a clementine at the moment but it's early days. )

I don't think these are going to get particularly big wrt the vines.
We're clearing a border , it has weed membrane and gravel, so the pumpkin pot can reside there this year.
