PEP - is this normal?

Sorry I need to moan!

I was invited to a Pep for my rising 5 FC,this was then cancelled, due to illness by sW, and it was decided that we would turn it into a parents meeting anyway. This turned back into a PEP, but with NO SW present>

The out come was, that I was slated to my face, all implications!

Amongst other things

i was TOLD I Had to send FC to school trips and he HAD to have School Christmas Dinner. If I was his Parent they would not do this, none of his friends are going. I would not mind but he is 1 of 3,

I was told, I did not bother to help with Homework, as it was not up to standard (FC will not do it for more than 5 mins! I do sit with him but I get him to do the work, I only write down what he says!)

I was told I did not bother to hand in his homework. His homework book, did not come home, it was left at school it turns out! and appeared a week later!

He has poor Fine motor skills, which is MY fault according to them. When he returned to school in September he could write his name OKish. Now it is a sequence of wiggles, this is my fault as well.

I have been left really annoyed and upset.Angry

Is this normal?Confused

Oh dear that doesn't sound very good.
Who was there if the sw wasn't?
I've not had a PEP yet for my fc so no advice on that.
Did they say anything positive or were they just criticising you?

Although I am confused as to why you wouldnt send your fc on the school trips and let him have a Xmas dinner.

Did they know you were upset, how did you respond? Have they raised any of these concerns before ?
Sorry not much help am I.
Hopefully someone will be along with better advice.

It is a pantomine trip, which FC told me he did not want to go to, ( he was offered a chance to go with us.) only 4 of his class are going, NOT the whole school as they told me.
School dinners,, we always have a family meal of an evening, so it is not necessary for school meals to be eaten.

The only positive was that he is an angel at school. the complete opposite of at home, which I was told they did not believe was true.

Personal education plan

Next time don't go without the child's social worker.

The process is meant to be collaborative. So yes, you need to support his education by making him do his homework for longer, practicing handwriting. You also need to ask what they will do to support his hand writing - we had the same issue so we pushed the school for extra books to practise letters and when foster dd came back from school homework was done first.

And we have always kept that up - homework before tv/ Internet. Usually with a drink or a snack.

Don't go without social worker next time :) and make a list of what you want from the school - extra support etc.

Ha! About 50% of PEPs in my authority are done either without SW or without child present Hmm

It certainly didn't sound very construuctive meeting. Did they give you some strategies to tackle the homework? If he's not even 5, then it's hardly surprising he won't spend more than 5 minutes on it!
Do you read to him every day, separately from any schoolwork?

I am ambivalent about panto trip- okay if all school were going then it would be good for socialisation, but if not then meh, I hate pantos Wink

School christmas lunch surely he could have? There is a lot of cameraderie about these things.

Ask school for exercises for motor control, or search on here in 'primary education' lots of good threads with help for this Smile

About the school trip I personally would expect that fc would be going if if was on during the normal school day

Wether they wanted to or not as its just what the class happened to be doing that day.

In regards to homework maybe You need to be a bit more firm

We have no telly till home works done if they wont do their homework they never watch telly No exceptions.

Christmas dinner if he's hot dinners to be fair I would just sighn him up for it
I am sure he eats roast potatoes, meat and veg so in my view not clear why he can't just have it their won't be anything else so he will just have to.

But others are correct don't go to meetings with out sw

Just one more thing peps should not be used as a general moaning forum by the school if they have any issues they should raise it at the time with you and only if they have no luck then should raise the issue with the sw.

Op I would make sure your clear with the school on this matter
The pep is to talk about any support the child might need in class

That would be like our IEP/ISP or CSPs then....
