Fostering

Saturday night - and waiting on the police

OH the life of a foster carer!!

DH shouted me through this evening when he was feeding LO, and I went through and he said - can you look at his finger - and LO has a burn on his index finger. I don't know how we haven't seen it, considering he has been in the bath twice!

I have been feeling unwell so DH has been doing most of the care, and LO normally like most toddlers has his fingers curled (it is on the tip)

So phone calls to out of hours, a trip to the hospital which thankfully their report supports that the injury is a few days old, and happened in the time frame the LO was at contact.

So police are on the way to the hospital to get a statement, then they are coming here, LO will be seen by the police surgeon and have a forensic medical

I am fairly certain that this injury has been an accident, but why they didn't tell anyone or get his help is a total mystery and of course has caused this chain of events :(

The police were lovely, it seems that we are pretty much in the clear - to the point that they didn't take the details of our own DC.

So tomorrow a police forensic photographer will be coming (or possibly Monday) and the police surgeon will see him probably on Monday

Thankfully the LO seems in no pain from the injury

Yeah it is a pretty horrid situation!

Waiting for the police photographer to arrive, they are treating it as an accident, which after mulling it over in my head when I was trying to get to sleep I am not so sure of any more - I can't see how he could have touched something with the side of his finger - surely that would have resulted in the injury being on the top.

Thankfully LO is fine EMIN.

I was told not to worry about it, that we are not under any suspicion at all.

Where was contact? Was it supervised?

Sounds very strange... hopefully someone will be able to get to the bottom of it.

We now have a 'contact diary' in which any issues that happen during contact are supposed to be recorded in it - and likewise if I have anything to pass on to mum then I enter it in... its actually working well.

Good luck & keep posting !! Wink

Hi Squidgy hope you are looking after yourself too. things like this are sooooooo stressful.

Is the burn a heat burn or a friction burn, they often look the same after a day or two.

one of mine had a friction burn from rubbing leg on something and it looked so like a cigerette burn.

p99 - he has been doing over night stays the contact is toped and tailed, with social workers dropping in occasionally

we have a contact note book too - but the parents never bother to write in it!!

Sumum

it is undoubtably a heat burn - there is evidence of blistering, and black charred skin - the hospital were of the opinion that he has touched something or something has touched him

The scene of crime officers were out and photographed him.

Thankfully the out of hours fostering team worker has been really wonderfully supportive!

Well Monday brought a forensic medical - although they only looked at his finger,

and Tuesday the parents were interviewed by the police

and Tuesday also brought - overnight contact with his parents (decision was made before the police interview)

so he was away Tuesday morning until earlier this evening! - The parents don't know how it happened (which I find totally unbelievable - having burned myself a few times I know how sore it it) and his social worker (who I must say I trust totally) feel that there is now way it could be anything but accidental - the fact he was alone long enough with something that he was able to burn himself seems to have been forgotten.

So we are forging ahead with rehab, if he is settled and showing signs that the parents are keeping him in his routine then he will be going to extended contact after next week - or the week after.
