Yes, I certainly have and it tastes just fine. Could always stick custard on it! Having said that, I've made a crumble top this afternoon without flour at all - found a new recipe to try. Just hope it comes out OK.

Sorry, just seen this thread again:

Oaty apple crumble (from the You are what you eat meal planner, adapted as I didn't have all the ingredients!)

200g museli
2tbsp pumpkin seeds
2tbsp sunflower seeds
25g walnuts
50g sultanas or raisins
2tsp ground cinnamon
1tbsp brown sugar
50g low-fat spread
2 large cooking apples
6tbsp water

serves 4

  1. Preheat oven to 180degC/gas 4. Place museli, 1tsp of cinnamon and nuts in a mixing bowl.
  2. Gently melt the low-fat spread in a small saucepan. Add to the dry mixture and combine thoroughly.
  3. Peel, core and slice the apples and lay them in a baking dish. Sprinkle the brown sugar, raisins or sultanas, and the remainder of the cinnamon. Add the water.
  4. Spoon the crumble mixture over the apples. Bake in the oven for about 40 mins. Serve with low fat yogurt or fromage frais.

Now I didn't have the walnuts or the seeds. I used corn flakes, rice krispies and rolled oats instead. The kids loved it!

I've never used anything but self raising in crumble since I discovered it via Nigella.

It's divine. And make sure you use loads of butter.

Whoever asked about using it for batter - no you can't, can't explain why, but it doesn't work.
