Cornbread recipe please?

I made a stew recently that suggested cornbread as the side dish. I found the recipe above, but found it took longer to cook than it said - which is fine - and was very sweet, like a cake. I don't know if it's supposed to be so sweet as I've never eaten it before. The recipe I used does contain a fair amount of sugar, is that normal?

So I wondered if anyone could recommend a tried and tested recipe please?

I've always found cornbread in the US to be sweet, certainly.

In case anyone is looking for cornbread recipes in future, I used this recipe:

www.food.com/recipe/real-southern-cornbread-51550

I don't have a cast iron skillet (ESSENTIAL apparently) but used a Le Crueset casserole which was fine but meant that when I tipped it out the bread broke up a bit which was a shame. I also added a small tin of sweetcorn, as per the previous recipe. I used polenta because you can't easily get stone milled corn here!

It turned out nice anyway. A bit crunchy. And less sweet than the other recipe. I prefer it.
