Simple, quick recipes using frozen seafood/prawns/fish

I have never cooked much fish or seafood before because DH doesn't like it, so tend to just grill fishfingers and eat seafood in restaurants.

But now I want to start cooking it for me and for the DC while DH isn't there.

Any easy ideas - ideally not involving defrosting but just adding the seafood still frozen?

I have thought of having it with spaghetti, either with olive oil and garlic, or with a tomato sauce.

But my inspiration ends there!

DD won't eat creamy sauces, but otherwise we are fairly adventurous - in taste if not in cooking technique.

I like to buy the mixed seafood (either chilled or frozen) add it to the Lyod Grossman Tomato and Chilli Sauce and have that with pasta.

If the DCs aren't keen on squid then it can be made using mussel meat or any mixed seafood.

If they don't like spicy then one of the other sauces should be OK.

The prawns take 20 minutes in the oven and come in the bag you bake them in and have a sauce in the bag as well.

Use as part of a topping for pizza with cheese and tomato. This would work with prawns mussels and calamari but not so well with chunks of salmon.
I used to top pizza with tinned sardines split lengthways in my cash strapped days, and it was always popular.

I made a quick spaghetti dish recently that was a large spoonful of crab pate stirred into cooked & drained spaghetti with a good squeeze of lemon and topped with cooked garlic prawns (Unearthed brand cooked in the microwave). Very simple and tasty.

DS1 loves prawns and they cook well from frozen. We have prawn linguine, stir fry with prawns and paella fairly regularly. I've also seen a recipe for a prawn curry I keep meaning to try.

He's starting getting into squid too now so I mean to start cooking more of that too. I've done salt and pepper squid and dish with chorizo and chickpeas so far.

Finally a regular store cupboard staple we have is crab linguine with white and brown tinned crabmeat. I'm sure you could use frozen if you prefer but I find tinned is very practical.

I usually add the prawns still frozen to this quick rice with chorizo/chicken and peppers

This curry and this salad it's better to use defrosted ones though, otherwise it's too wet

Most supermarkets do a fish pie mix, usually 1/3 salmon, 1/3 white fish and 1/3 smoked white fish, put in a white or cheese sauce, cover with mash, bake in oven and delicious fish pie.

karma Do you heat up the tinned crab or just stir it into the linguini?

There is a lovely seafood pasta dish on www.bbcgoodfood.com (on phone, cant link) called 20 minute seafood pasta.

Its basically an onion and a clove of garlic chopped and fried, add a can of chopped tomatoes and 1/2 litre of chicken stock, throw in the pasta and bring to boil, 5 mins before end throw in the seafood.

Boiling the pasta in the sauce thickens it all up and its lovely - quick, easy and healthy Smile

I fry an onion with a bit of chilli until soft and then add the crab. Ito already cooked but I warm it through before adding the pasta.

Mmm. Prawn and lemon risotto adding frozen prawns near the end is good.

Have you got a special microwave dish for frozen fish? Puts a water bath underneath the fish and it steams it.

Thanks for all of these great ideas Smile. I tried the sweet chili prawns with rice and peas yesterday, and it was a great success. Love the sound of paella and prawn and lemon risotto, and the Nigella curry.

I don't have a microwave, but I can steam fish over a saucepan of water.

Thanks karma I'll be giving that a try very soon.

No problem. Should also say that I finish it off with a handful of chopped parsley.
