I don't know about rice, but we use ours all the time for rice and it cooks brilliantly.

We use Basmati rice - put in about a cupful per person, rinse through a few times and then put in (and here's the technical bit) enough water that when you put your first finger in the water, touching the rice, the water comes to your first joint. Hope that makes sense - so about 1 - 2 cms. I know that sounds a silly way of measuring, but it works! It'll click off when it's done.

oops - I meant I don't know about pasta! Hopefully someone else will come along and help with that.

or alternatively you could not wash it (my dad would absolute kill me for that, but hey) and put in one cup of dry to one and a bit cups of water. same result at dotty dot.

so for example 3 cups or rice and 3 1/2 cups of water

When I used my rice cooker I would use a cup to measure rice and put in double the amount of water. It switched off by itself but had a "keep warm" switch which I never used as it tended to dry out the rice.

don't know how to work one but my brother has one and thinks it is fab.

Great for cooking huge quantities of rice for parties and keeping it warm without poisoning your guests
