Steak - what to serve?

We have friends coming round for dinner on Saturday night and I am thinking of doing steak. What would you serve with it - veg, pots, sauce and any suggestions for a dessert?

I would do chips (good quality) or wedges, grilled giant mushrooms, maybe a creamy mustard sauce in a little jug, or a red wine sauce, pea, onion rings.
(Ravenous now!)
Pudding- Eton mess cos I love it. Or delias chocolate torte, with fruit salad option for dieters.

Peas. One pea would seem a bit mean.

Fries. Bearnaise sauce. Salt. Veg is superfluous imo but if you feel you have to then maybe some wilted spinach?
Some kind of rich chocolatey pudding.
Mmmmmm.

Chips! Nigella cold oil style are really easy www.nigella.com/kitchen-queries/view/Cooking-Fries-Starting-With-Cold-Oil/3913 Prep and dry the chips in advance

And I'd do a sort of minted crushed pea puree thing with watercress and avocado as a side.

Dessert a lemon torte.

Or this Heston choc and passion fruit pud which is really easy and can be made in advance www.channel4.com/programmes/how-to-cook-like-heston/articles/all/exploding-chocolate-gateau-recipe

Skip the step on the heston thing where he sprays the whole bloody thing - I usually just brush melted choc round to cover the base

Dauphinoise potatoes, roasted vine tomatoes, roast mushrooms, rocket salad.
One of my favourite dinners of all time.
You could maybe have a peppercorn sauce but tbh if you make the dauphinoise nice & creamy you won't need an extra sauce.

Or lovely chips plus onion rings, mushroom, peas & salad. Old-skool but a classic for a reason :)
For dessert I think I'd do a lemon tart if doing the Dauphinoise, if you do chips then follow it with something else retro, Black Forest gateau or chocolate mousse maybe?

This is a fab rocket and horseradish sauce. You just bung all the ingredients into a blender

We are having steak tonight, with mushrooms cooked in butter and garlic and then put in a ramekin and baked with a bit of dolcelatte on the top until the cheese melts. Steamed shredded cabbage and finely chopped leeks and crushed new potatoes.

Fries definitely, or a mustardy mash. Asparagus, big mushrooms and the rocket and horseradish sauce sounds fab. Not Dauphinoise, too rich.

lavender - that sounds wonderful and has completely put me off my re-heated shepherd's pie from last night Grin.

Very sorry Ragwort! DH is home tonight for the first night in 10 days and I am leaving in the morning for two nights. I thought I should make a bit of an effort tbh as I am sure that he will be having reheated shepherds pie tomorrow Smile.

lavender - I hope you have a lovely evening. Smile I was going to ask if this was a special meal or the sort of thing you ate every night. Grin
I am going to copy your mushroom in a ramekin idea - but not tonight !

Best thing wiith steak: baked potatoes with sour cream and chives or spring onions, plus a good dark green salad.

Oh, absolutely every night Ragwort Grin, says Lavender the not so domestic goddess. In truth I do try to make an effort once a week.

The mushrooms are divine, I made it up one day when the cheese was looking a bit old and we loved it.

We are both really busy at the minute, have barely seen each other for the last month Sad. It won't be forever though so it is fine I suppose.

I always do salads: grated carrot, cucumber in soy sauce, tomatoes, potato, maybe garlic bread. All made in advance then just cook the steaks.

We went out to a local Italian restaurant last night, an unexpected midweek treat :)
Anyway, I had fillet steak with Gorgonzola sauce with rosemary roast potatoes, roasted vine tomatoes & spinach salad. It was bloody lovely. If highly recommend that as a way to serve steak.
Hope you enjoyed your dinner op.
