I can't imagine cutting down on bread, pasta, cereals. What's the alternative? Anyone got any ideas - child friendly.

I eat no gluten - lots of meat and 2 veg type meals, leftover roast and microwaved veggies instead of a sandwich.

Veggie baton with hummous as a snack or a handful of crisps (always popular).

I don't eat pasta apart from sometimes making a lasagne with potato pasta (which is fab).

Breakfast is rice porridge or rice flakes (special ones without malt) lots of yoghurt, fruit and rice bread with philadephia on it.

I like eating things that are expensive but naturally gluten free like cashew nuts rather than pay a fortune for horrid crumbly bread. Substitution only worked for me after about 2 months once I had forgotten what the original tasted like.

And now - don't miss it.

Here it's just the normal free from pasta happens to be made from potato flour. it's very absorbant so makes a great lasagne.

But I think you'll find less resistance by serving naturally wheat free food.

Alternatives, er, potatoes? That includes chips, roast, boiled, mashed, casserole. Add some ketchup, they won't miss the pasta... what about rice? Brown, white, basmati, rissoto...Boiled egg instead of a sarnie in child lunchbox? Rice cakes with spread in lunchbox? Lentils, pearl barley, quinoa, arame or pulses for tea (admittedly, my children won't eat, but DH & I happily tuck in while they have something else).

Heap up with vegetables and keep the starches a small part of the main meal.

Bread: so many options. eg., You can get rye bread in Lidl that has almost no wheat. It's like wholemeal, though, so go for a rice or corn flour bread if your children wouldn't touch wholemeal.

Corn biscuits (scones) or buckwheat pancakes (American style).

Cereals: porridge, corn flakes, readybrek, rice puffs, puffed millet etc. in health food shop.

My children eat all of that fine, although they love wheat bread, too. I imagine it's very hard to be completely wheat free, but cutting down just seems easy to me.

I'd say it's easier to cut it out altogether

  1. you can see if wheat was actually a problem.
  2. you stop missing it, craving it - which is actually a symptom you have a problem with it.
  3. You can't lie to yourself in the manner of a dieter.
  4. Come on - beautiful french baguette or crappy rice bread that needs toasting and is still bloody awful - which would you choose!
