Substitute for coconut cream in curry?

DP bought a Tamil curry spice mix from small local shop. It's supposed to be mixed with coconut cream. He doesn't like coconut so just mixed some (far too much as well!) with water and cooked with that. It was completely inedible, although you could tell it probably had a nice flavour underneath.

It hadn't occurred to him it needed something creamy to form the sauce and you can't just leave that part out. I'm thinking of trying it mixed with natural yoghurt instead - do you think that would work?

The book "A Girl Called Jack" suggests substituting coconut yogurt for coconut cream.

I'd probably use creme fraiche if you don't want a coconutty taste.

Natural yogurt or cream would work, or just put in the spice mix, and add some ground almonds and yogurt to the final curry?

I use coconut oil to fry the stuff (it's a very mild coconut taste and it's good for you) and use yogurt for the creaminess.

Some nut butter (e.g. cashew, almond, macadamia) and a bit of water to make it the right consistency.
