Sardines?

How do you make sardines? they're really cheap, unlike most oily fish, and I need the calcium from the bones. But what on earth am I supposed to do with them? There are only so many fishcakes a person can eat, though I do like them.

I can't eat things with gluten (coeliac), and try not to eat beans or most grains (digestive problems).

Thanks!

chimeraobscura.com/mi/pasta-con-le-sarde/ I made this earlier in the week and it was gorgeous, obv it's pasta but you could serve it perhaps as a baked potato topping?

Oh that does look good! And it would work with a potato I'd think.

The black spaghetti looks pretty good too.

Amazon purchase, I spend far too much on food.

Another coeliac here who was also told to eat sardine. I do:

  • cooked into tomato sauce with gf corn pasta
  • noodle soup but you could leave the noodles out
  • cesar salad replacing the anchovies for sardines

I found with beans and grains to introduce tiny amounts and slowly build up to a portion sized. Initially I was eating a tablespoon of beans as my stomach could not cope.

Was also going to say cook into a tomato based pasta sauce, over quinoa if you can handle it (I can only really handle white rice and potatoes to be honest). If you ever get fresh ones, lovely split and grilled with a drizzle of olive oil, some mint leaves and pinenuts.

All of those sound really good - I'd never have thought of soup. There's a good fishmonger near me so I probably could get fresh ones. Seems like tomatoes are the way to go, and they'd probably travel for lunch as well. I never had caesar salad but it would probably be a good idea to try!

I like tinned sardines mashed (bones and all) with tomatoes and a dash of vinegar on toast. Maybe you could try it with toasted polenta. Or on a bed of braised green veggies such as lettuce, leeks or kale.

Or cold with potato salad, tomatoes, olives and green leaves and a sauce of tomato puree and mayo.

Or make a chowder with celery, potatoes and onions and cream.

I love them just as they are straight out of the tin with salad and jacket potatoe.

Or they are very good toasted

A recent "discovery" is sardines with roast veg. A tray of mixed chopped veg in a little oil in the oven for 40 mins top with a tin of sardines for the last 20 mins.

I can definitely eat polenta, sardines and tomatoes would be good with that! So would roast veg, which I'm having for tea tomorrow. Good ideas, thanks!
