You know those onions they bring with the poppadoms at an Indian restaurant?

How can I make them at home? I have tried just chopping onions but they don't taste the same. What do they have on them? Salt? I am craving them... Help!

Ours are the same as TeamEdward - cucumber and tomato, finely chopped with coriander. I also put a little mango chutney in mine with some oil and mix it in

I remember seeing a tv show years ago which showed a way of cooking onions Indian restaurant style. They used a big heavy based saucepan, loads of ghee and dropped in sliced onion, swirled them around to cover the onion in the ghee and left them to cook on a low heat for hours. I've tried a couple of times to replicate this but always end up burning the fuckers.

Got this recipe from the back of a packet of nigella (black onion seeds): Finely chop an onion, mix with a tsp of black onion seeds, sprinkle with salt and a tiny dash of chilli powder, and pour on some lemon juice. Leave in the fridge for at least half an hour to let the flavours combine.
It's delish!

I know where you're coming from Souper. The onions in our Indian are crisp but not hot, I normally won't eat raw onion but I do there. It doesn't taste of anything else though, I can't taste salt, lemon or mint and there's definitely no ketchup. I've always wondered how they do it.

ketchup and mint. They are lovely with nango chutnet on Poppadoms. Funnily enough I only know ine pkace here in Bradford that donthem, but they are common most other places.

I think if you soak the onions you will get that milder flavour, that you are prepared to eat raw

Ketchup! I asked too! At saffron desi in Bradford. Although I've yet to make them taste the same, I suspect you have to leave the onions in for ages or maybe soak them first??
