Austins (Aldi Pimms) - what do people think?

am having a big crowd round soon, and was going to serve Pimms.

MadLizzy mentioned on another that Aldi's version (Austins) was just as good but way cheaper. If you have tried it (and have also tried Pimms) would you let me know if a) you can't really tell the difference b) not the same but nice anyway c) really didn't like?

Given the amount I am likely to need, this would make a huge difference cost-wise but if a lot of people don't like it, will stick with Pimms and just buy less

Thanks

I haven't tried Austins but Pimms was on special offer in Tesco when I was there on Wed, if that helps

I've tried it and it was OK. Loads of mint cucumber and strawbs and quality lemonade and no one will know.

thanks MissFenella. I don't mind people knowing it's a cheaper version but I do mind if they really don't enjoy it!

I think the taste of Pimms can vary so much depending on the lemonade, how much mint you put in , how strong you make it etc, that I don't think most people could tell the difference unless they've got them side by side. We usually buy Austins, it's absolutely fine IMO. I had Pimms at a friends last week and then Austin's with Aldi's cheap lemonade at the weekend and I actually preferred the Austins.

Ooh I saw this in Aldi last week and thought it was a fab price - the Pimms was either £12 or £10 depending where you went. I may get a bottle of this for me!

have got Schwepps lemonade (also on offer in Costco) - does that count as good quality lemonade?

I can't tell the difference or if I can it's nice enough that I don't care! Definitely think that good lemonade and plenty of cucumber/strawberries/mint etc will only make it even better. For the price difference you really can't go wrong.

Tesco also do their own cheaper version, I think it's called Jeeves. Much the same story in fact it's probably Austin's in a different bottle!

I think it's excellent. Tastes very good.

Quaffing it as I type.

[Cheers!]

Shame I've gone teetotal just as it's the weather for Austin's.

I've not had it but Aldi are usually pretty good when it comes to their own version of food and drink.

Tbh though Pimms is usually so full of chopped up fruit and lemonade I can't really taste much else. I don't get the hypeConfused it's the 'kings new clothes' of the drinks world imho Grin

I think it is more about he quality of the mixers and the fruit - lots of ice and fresh mint and no one will tell the difference

i had forgotten about this! we used to neck gallons of it as students - that and BallyCastle, the mock-baileys. you'd never spot the difference after six or seven of them.

I think it actually tastes nicer - we went through two bottles of it the other week between 3 of us - lots of lemonade, strawberries, melon and cucumber in ours.
