Fasting / 5:2 diet

5:2 Thread number 51: Whoever said "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" obviously never tasted ice cream or chocolate ! 5:2 is for those who enjoy good food and don't want to diet every damn day

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.

Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine.
Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!

Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.

HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.

When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
==================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLomgo , and a LongoInterview

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

You're on the ball, BC!

Thanks for all your hard work! Flowers

Here's a tip I've recently discovered, to start the new thread off:

If you want a biscuit - or a sweet or some chocolate - open a jar of Marmite or similar, first.

Decide how many biscuits you're going to have - I try and limit myself to two - then, when they're gone, have a taste of the Marmite (dip your finger in and lick your finger clean).

You'll find the desire to binge on consume more of your chosen treat has disappeared - and you're in control again.

As a vegan, I find this also works with half a teaspoon of nooch (nutritional yeast).

(Now back to thread no. 50!)

Hello everyone, I haven't been here for a week - or fasted for a week!

My daughter has been really ill and I am not made of strong enough stuff to fast on nil sleep! It is amazing how we all cope without sleeping when our children are tiny - I couldn't do it now.

Anyway, I am planning on rewarding my day with my favourite sea bass and vegetables.

I have talked about my exercise before - an hour's brisk dog walk. Well, yesterday I managed to use my cross trainer as well which was good, but the exciting thing Grin is that lovely DH bought me some Nordic walking poles this week.

I have read about the benefits of Nordic walking and tried them out today. First time out of the house for a week felt wonderful, but, these poles are amazing.

Now, I probably looked a bit silly Grin, but I was down to my vest top 5 minutes into my walk. It felt very similar to skiing muscle group wise (I know it was thought up by x country skiers). I enjoyed it so much I did an extra loop in the forest, in the same amount of time as my normal walk so my pace must have been very different.

Happy Friday to all fasters.

Carbe my mum is doing great now, back to herself again, dropping into me with her lovely home baking!! I know waiting for results can be an anxious time as well, I will keep everything crossed that all will be well Wink

Hey Lavendar sorry to hear your DD has been unwell, it's tough going when they're sick, so you were right not to fast....hope she is recovering now....your Nordic poles sound excellent....are the for hill walking?? Am hoping to do a mountain climb in July...it's called Croagh Patrick, I don't know if any of you have heard of it (it's in Ireland) pilgrimages of people usually do it, and I've been wanting to it for years....so this year I'm doing it!

meerka hope you feel better soon, will see you on Monday for a FD Wink

FD here today, thinking there will be lots of food on the go tomorrow & Sunday, and next week is bank holiday & St Patrick's Day, so kids will be off, still hope to fast on Monday though...

Have a good weekend everyone Smile....

MrsSteven part of the reason I look silly is that I live in Norfolk, not a hill in sight sadly Grin, nothing to do with my form of course! I grew up in the Yorkshire Dales, I miss hills and so does my bottom.

Give yourself all the time you need, Meerka Prolonged fever is very debilitating. Just try to eat healthily.
10 years ago, I had 2 bouts of genuine influenza in succession - it took me 4 months to regain my previous gym performance.
(Don't worry, fasting isn't as demanding as my mad workouts)

I have missed the threads about people not being well, I hope everyone is on the mend and people waiting for news hear good news Flowers.

DD is back at school today, although I am not straying far from home because I half expect a phone call.

Really interesting though, she was BF and then had a very severe dairy allergy (with epipen) so had never had dairy, until we went on a programme to reintroduce it last year which was successful, which is of course wonderful.

This week she had her first ever ear infection - 39.8 deg raging temps and in agony for a week, especially at night of course. I seem to remember lots of blurb about BF babies not suffering and then we never did introduce dairy - well only once or twice before she stopped breathing.

Thanks Meerka Hope you're feeling 100% soon.

Hope your dd is on the mend now Lavender Nasty ear infections are hell, I've had a few in my time.

Mrs Wonderful! I'm glad your mum is well. Thank you.

I've just seen some photos of mum - she looks unbelievably well considering what she's just been through. She had 2 small seizures late morning but they've said it's completely normal - it's just the brain protesting a bit from being prodded and cut at - she had medication and all seems well now.
The HDU Dr told my sister - exactly like this -
It went well, they removed what they could, it was the size of a satsuma - your mums consultant will discuss on the ward -
and off he toddled before my sis could ask anything :)
I hope what they could means ALL except a few stray cells which can be blitzed with radio and not as in an actual piece of the monster left.

FIL - has just had to explain to me on the phone ( in childlike fashion) why and how biopsy examination takes so god damn long. Obviously I knew that pathologists don't simply pick up the thing and inspect with their eyes but hells bells - who knew (except lab techs) just what was involved :)
Trying to keep positive, get through the weekend and wait for next week brings.

Food today - nada! Beef goulash and kasza (smoked buckwheat) for dinner.
Exercise - Ab training done. Tried to jog but couldn't focus properly, I was too scared I'd slip/fall as the forest floor was really slippy from the rain so I walked really fast instead. Hopefully it will be dry next time.

Meerka, sadly not, DD had an anaphylactic response to dairy so she never had any at all other than yoghurt, the first time she came out in hives, the second time she stopped breathing which was entirely terrifying. After that we had the nightmare of avoiding it and carrying two epipens for seven years. Sorry to shock, I could have written it better.

Carbe, that sounds really positive.

Fast day going well, I am starving right now but I will make it today!

Mrs looks like you'll have the same weekend difficulties as me - 4 days at home in a row with the kids. Never manage to fast well at home. On the plus side, it will be DD2's first ever experience of a St Patrick's Day Parade and DD1's first "local" one, so it should be fun.

I discovered a great way to keep my lunch time eating under control - forget to bring money in to work! I had 4euro with me today, so one sandwich was my limit Grin

vvviola I've gotten into the habit at home, as long as the kids are at school, I don't mind it, it's when Theyre at home and I'm making snacks & lunch and whatever else they fancy....the temptation to nibble and pick while I'm making it up is soooo hard! Aww that's lovely, your dds will really enjoy the parade, mine love them too, Dd1 is in our local one this year, she's a leapracaun Grin we're so original!! Have a good time....I'm doing a FD on Monday (hopefully) if your in need of a buddy! Actually that's a very good idea for FD at work, bring nothing but water Wink!

lavendar that gave me laugh re you walking around with your poles and not a hill in sight Grin that must have been terrifying for you & your dd, so glad she's ok now, can just imagine how hard it is to avoid dairy...

Carbe I can imagine you can't wait to see your DM, great to hear she's looking so well....it's a real eye opener when you discover what is involved in the whole process of biopsies and treatment....but she sounds like she's doing good at the moment, and that's a great sign...

FD going good here, nearly dinner time at last, have the JM dvd done (that was lunch for me!) a run tonight and then a nice chilled out weekend ahead Smile

I was out for a lovely curry and wine with friends last night so am throwing in a mini fast today to try to offset the damage! Not sure what I'll eat for tea, it probably won't be under 500 cals but will certainly keep it as low as possible.

I'm so jealous of those of you losing good weight. I've been dancing with the same 4/5 pounds since Christmas and it's really getting annoying. Inches haven't shifted either. I have three theories: 1) my body is adjusting as I lost two stone last year (still have two to go); 2) still BF once/twice a day so my body is clinging on to fat; 3) I'm doing something very wrong...

Trenzalor Your weight may have plateaued while your body gets used to being 2 stone lighter.

Another possibility: sometimes people can lose the first few stone on a very relaxed regime, but for the remaining weight they need to monitor NFDs more closely.

Do you mfp ? If not, I recommend you do so for a week, to check if you are exceeding TDEE significantly.
Also, could weekends be sabotaging progress ?

If you are eating your current TDEE, then I suggest you recalculate it for your goal weight and sedentary.
For the next 2 weeks, aim for this on weekday NFDs and check you stay within current TDEE on Saturdays and Sundays.
Can you add some HIIT ?
Can you improve nutritional quality by cutting down on treats and alcohol ?

After the 2 weeks, let's review and if this strategy has broken your plateau.

Hope those who have had the lurgy are better soon. I'm rubbish at remembering most people's names and as I'm on my phone I can't check.

carbe glad to hear your mum is doing ok.

NSV for me today. I'm a shower person really but today had a bath for the first time in ages. The water temperature was the same in front as behind! I normally wedge the bath and usually need to keep moving on my side to equalise the temperature Grin I've lost 22lbs but I'd not measured but I guess there was an inch free at either side of my rear end!

That was probably TMI Hmm
