Mirena Coil success stories

Hi - I'm getting the Mirena Coil fitted next week for heavy prolonged periods. I can only seem to find horror stories about the insertion and side effects. Could anyone please share any positive stories about the Mirena experience? Thanks

Sorry, the only positive is my periods were lighter, except I bled constantly...for 8 months without relent.

I had two, and had a very happy 10 years with them. I could not find a variety f the pill that suited me after DS2 was born and had lots of spotting and cramps. Once the Mirena was fitted I had no problems at all and after 3 months with odd bits of spotting no periods at all. Highly recommended.

I have the copper coil, it is brilliant, would you consider this? no hormones...

I terrified myself googling about insertion, I promise it hurt for 3 seconds. And only a bit my lip 'ow', nothing terrible at all.

I love mine. First couple of days I did have some unpleasant cramping, but since then, no issues whatsoever. No periods either which has been wonderful - I'm pretty active so it's been really liberating.

Why is this in Bloggers' Chat? Why not post in the health topic? Confused

I haven't had a period in years, sometimes I get the tiniest bit of spotting when I'm on.

Take some painkillers before insertion, it's unpleasant but totally doable. I had light, period like cramping and light spotting on and off for about 3 months until things settled down. And the strings (?) had to be shortened at the control visit, as they were poking dh.

I was gutted when my new Mirena couldn't be fitted the day the old one came out! I had no. 2 in as soon as possible, and will have a third one as well.

You tend to only hear the horror stories, as when they work there's nothing to report. I've had two, first for five years, then the second took me to the menopause, which I completely failed to notice. So a total of 13 years. No downsides, upsides no periods or babies (I think the non-menopause might have been hereditary, as my mother's was the same). If it works it's brilliant.

Well I've only had mine in 7 weeks but so far I love it! I love sex with no worries, I love no periods (so far, very light spotting a few days after I had it inserted)

Getting it inserted was uncomfortable but only because I thought the doctor said "I'm going to cut your cervix now" but she had really said "I'm going to catch your cervix", I was too scared to say anything but froze with fear and broke into a cold sweat.

So far I'm really pleased with it

Mixed feelings
Had my first one for 5 years, v. bad cramps after insertion (no DC), no further issues, loved it, no bleeding at all, frankly marvelous!
Second one didn't hurt to put in BUT no sex drive, acnea, weight gain... and I ended up "rejecting" it spontaneously after less than a year. 9 months later I was PG with DS1 so could be psychological.
Good luck!

Hi there,

We're going to move this thread over to our Family Planning topic shortly - Bloggers' Chat isn't really the right place for it! Smile

Loved mine.....bled on and off for first few months, then just no periods....brilliant. Had it removed about 9months after dp's vasectomy :)

Have had two, one between the kids, and one after the second...both with very few issues :)

It was great. Until I removed it a few weeks ago and found that suddenly I have a sex drive again, don't feel depressed and am no longer bone-achingly tired.

I've had mine for 4 years. It has been great. I've gone from heavy painful periods to s slightly pink discharge.

Love it.

had mine nearly 4 years. its brilliant. with pcos i would have such heavy periods i would fill a mooncup in an hour and almost pass out. this has brought them to a light brownish discharge for 3 to 4 days once every 4 to 5 weeks. i get spots still, and boob pain, but its all manageable.

insertion was difficult, but i have a notoriously bad cervix. im not allowed one removed and inserted on same day apparently, unless i go get knocked out, which im tempted by as i dont want to be without it for even a short while now!

Love mine, had one in for 10 years, insertion really wasn't that bad, had light bleeding for a few weeks then nothing but the odd spot for 10 years, sheer bliss! I am carrying a bit more weight than I should but I think that is entirely down to too much cake.

I'm due a replacement but due to my advanced years the family planning consultant said its better to leave this one in, it will also prevent the random bleeding you get as you head towards menopause.

I know some people don't get on with hormonal contraception but I've never had noticeable side effects and the mireana has been a god send after the horrible heavy periods I suffered from for years.

Give it a shot!

7 years and counting here. Love it. Absolutely no problems with it, ever. Insertion was simple too. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I'm going to bite the bullet and get it done. I was concerned that it would be painful to insert and the side effects would be horrific. I think I posted this in the wrong area as I'm completely new to Mumsnet today and this my first attempt at posting - I'm a technophobe so apologies for putting it in the wrong area!

Absolutely love mine. I'm on my second now and will have them until menopause. I did have to stick with it for the first few months as I got irregular bleeding and spotting. Since then, no periods and no side effects. I mentioned to my doctor how much I loved it and she said in her experience most women are very happy with them. It's just that those who aren't tend to talk about their experiences more which leads to a perception that there are more horror stories than there actually are.

I love mine and it sorted out my heavy periods.

Take 2 paracetmol half an hour before your fitting appointment - really helps.

I'm pretty new to it, I've by had mine for 2 months and have had spotting/periods on/off since then - but no cramping.

Insertion was fine - it is meant to be less uncomfortable if you have had a baby before. It literally took a few minutes to get it done - and my experience probably lasted longer as the chaperone was new and the nurse took her time talked her through the whole process as she did it.
