Hello, I am just looking for experiences with the depo injection. Have tried numerous different form of contraception over the with nothing really suiting me. This is the only thing I haven't tried and just wanted to see how others have got on with it. Thank you :)

I have the depo, have had it for years. I find it works best for me and I don't bleed.

I think it's good as long as you don't want any more children soon. It can take a looooooooooong time for fertility to return

If you have the depo and don't like it you can't just stop taking it but ypu have to wait until it is out of your system. I am guessing ou have tried implant? Is there such a thing as non hormonal coil?

Yes I tried the implant, didn't really work for me. That's what I am worried about the length of time for your fertility to return as i may want another child in the future.

Have you spoken to your practice nurse or gone to a sexual health clinic for advice?

I had the depo, was pregnant within 3 months of coming off it. Went back on it after dd, stopped recently and had af within 2 months. I was really happy on it, had no side effects and no af at all.

I am pretty certain that it my case it was depo that was the cause of low moods.
Other than that it was fine physically for me.

I put on 3 stone in 6 months on the depo injection. My moods were all over the place and I hated it.
It also took a long time for my fertility to return after I stopped having the injections.

I had depo injections for about 6 years. Took about a year for my fertility to return to normal after that long period on it. I had no weight gain side effects, and no mood problems- but the waiting for AF to return after I ended it was a long slow depressing wait, and one that I wasn't aware of when I started getting the jab at the age of 20!

I bled solidly for 4 months
I put on 2 stone in 6 months
Acne like I had never ever had before or since
No sex drive at all

I would never have it ever again

I bled all the time and put on tons of weight so I wouldnt advise it.

Had it for a while after my first dc. Dont know if it was the depo injection or just the fact that I had a small child, but I had zero libido when I was on it. However I know others who have had it without that particular problem, so if you decide to go for it, just be alert to some of the signs that it may not suit

i also had a hellish time on depo. massive weight gain, terrible moods and took ages for my periods to come back. i was on it for about 2 years.

it's also used to chemically castrate sex offenders

I had depo recently and only managed one cycle. I bled all the way through (great contraception!) and the headaches were debilitating. The trouble with it is if it doesn't agree with you you can't get it out your system.

I'm three months post finishing and my periods haven't returned, the headaches are still hanging around, and the hormones are horrendous- have packed a bag to leave more than once!

Hated it! Never again.

Had one cycle in Oct. Bled heavily for two weeks them no bleeding since. Still waiting for periods to return.
I also think it caused low moods and some weight gain.
Never again for me.

I took it twice so was on it for 6 months. Put on two stone and had low moods, irritability and feelings of anger regularly. Plus I had no sex drive what's so ever and acne.

I wouldn't recommend it! Confused

I gained so much weight on it and bled constantly. Not what you need as a newlywed!

I loved it! Suited me down to the ground - been on it twice in between children!

I was on the Depo before.

First 2 injections were easy (on the bum BTW). I got a periond the first month and then nothing. My appetite increased a fair bit and I put on a little weight (about 5/6 lbs) My skin was pretty good and I had less breakouts than normal.

3rd injection hurt like hell and my bum was bruised and sore. 4 days later I got a period that lasted for 4 months straight. It was hellish. I had to take iron supplements as I became anaemic. My face / back and chest broke out in acne and it took 6 months to calm down.

Needless to say I discontinued with the Depo after the 3rd injection and it took about 3 months after stopping to get out my system. I was then contraception free for about a year and my periods came back to normal 3 months after stopping. I wasn't TTC so can't comment on that aspect.

So yeah first 6 months were great. Then next 6 not so much. I am pretty convinced that my last injection wasn't done correctly and that's what caused the problems but its not something I would personally risk again.

I was on it for 10 years or so. I had trouble conceiving DD after having come off it for 2 years.. not sure if the two were related but it took a LONG time to get out of my system and masked what they think was PCOS. There is evidence to suggest that it does affect fertility returning. It took over a year to conceive ds after no contraception following DD. I was 38 though. I did put on a little weight but reacted well to being on it and had no periods. It is definitely not what you need if you are planning to have kids any time soon.

Depo was brilliant for me. Easy, no bleeding and no side effects that I was aware of. After being on it for about 2.5 years though I was told I needed to come off it due to increased risk of osteoporosis in later life. Changed to the implant which really didn't work for me, inconsistent and frequent bleeding which was a contraceptive all of its own!

I liked it - no periods and no side effects, unlike the implant which caused me to gain a LOT of weight and have hideous mood swings.
I'm just about to go back on the Depo and it will be a relief.
