Mirena. Might just rip the bastard thing out myself

Talked into having Mirena rather than the copper iud I'd gone to have fitted. (I'm 40 and have "completed my family"). Never had problematic periods.
I am due to have my 6 week check in about a week.
I feel so pissed off that I didn't decline. I've had one before, it lasted a month before I begged to have it removed because I felt it was responsible for my wt gain, crap skin and moodiness.
When I told the doctor this she brushed it off, saying that the levels of progesterone were so low it couldn't have been the cause of my problems.
Virtually since day 1 it's been a problem apart from a reasonably pain free insertion.
I feel like i'mhaving the worst pmt ever. My hair is greasy, my appetite for carbs is off the scale and I'm getting headaches. I am truly irritable. I can't afford to feel like this. It's not fair on my family (apart from DH who should've just gone for a fucking vasectomy like I asked - might bloody well do it myself!) see?
So, are they to bang on about the cost of the thing? Try and make me wait to see if things "settle down"?
Do you think I can just insist they replace it with a copper coil?
Help?

It's shit. I had all the symptoms you describe and more. I insisted they take it out and stick in the copper one. I have stopped hoovering up bread and my sex drive has miraculously returned. Hormones suck. Google mirena in here and you will hear similar tails of woe.

If dr won't do it, contact family planning clinic. They will remove it.

You are not alone. Here is the bastard mirena thread Grin

I felt similar to you when I had my copper coil it, felt much better after I pulled it out (I would not recommend you do it yourself).

I hated my Mirena. It was such a relief to get it out and I felt like myself again within a couple of days.

I put up with it for 18 spotty, banshee months.

Oh fuck. Forehead slap moment! Of course! No wonder I've been so bloody tearful lately. Doh. I had obe fitted in July and I have been on an emotional rollercoaster with bad skin. I think though, in our case dp will have to have a V as I don't need any extra hormones thank you very much and the copper one made me bleed constantly.

Blimey. Not alone then. Thanks for your replies. It's so supportive to hear your views, but sorry others have had a bad time too.
I've just eaten 6 pieces of baklava. SIX! Barely touched the sides.
Dh won't have a Vasectomy. Cunt!
I might just ask them to swap the Mirena for a decree absolute. (feiw, dh is downstairs cleaning the kitchen.
Off to fp next week. Definitely.

I stuck it out for 6 months! Worst 6 months of my life Sad

I had my period 3.5 weeks out of every 4 and was so run down and anaemic by the time I had it removed that it took me months to recover!

I then tried the progesterone-only pill (Cerazette), which made me suicidal! Lutenyl was the same...

Since then I have steered clear of hormonal contraception in any shape or form and am much, much happier and healther Smile

I had it for 6 weeks. Spoke to FP GP. Expected a battle but I described my symptoms, with emphasis on how extreme mood swings were and she agreed to remove it on the condition that if my mood swings didn't improve I went back. It came out 2 days ago: I already feel loads better. Less moody, less crampy (didn't realise how much that was bothering me til it stopped), my hair isn't greasy and I don't have stinky arm pits. Phew! No idea what I'll do for contraception now though Confused

Can we have a DIY-vasectomy thread? Then we can sort our DHs and we won't have to have the bastard coils anymore?

I was due to have a Mirena fitted but am already pretty hormone-pumped thanks to onset of perimenopause (self-diagnosed) so I reckon DH is going to have to man up and get the snip!

Our mums didn't have to put up with this shit, did they? My DDad is the biggest wimp on the planet, but even he had the snip!

I'm so glad you're feeling better havealittlefaith
It's shit isn't it. I'll probably just have a copper coil.

poppy I am Beyond furious that DH won't have a vasectomy.
I'm tempted to not bother with contraception and just get rid of him. Angry

So why don't you just get sterilised?

Progesterone is a bitch. I can't take the pill because of it. Evil hormone!

True nocarsgo

Fair question argymargy. If DH would have a vasectomy, I wouldn't need to. Tubal ligation carries greater risks than vasectomy, which is the more "minor" of the two procedures.
Plus. I wouldn't mind still using condoms tbh.

Seems to me that coils 'n shit carry risks too...

We use condoms for this reason, hormonal contraceptive make me feel unbelievably shit. It angers me that GPs brush off concerns, I was feeling shit at 1 month check after going on the combined pill, GP totally disregarded my symptoms, told me they weren't down to the pill, so I went through bloody months of feeling shit, came off pill, felt better, was persuaded to try a different brand, another month of feeling utterly depressed. Never again. DH doesn't fancy the snip, I didn't really fancy pregnancy and child birth..

Report
HaveALittleFaith · 31/08/2013 23:01

My DH suggested the snip when the mirena plan went Pete Tong but he is only 29 and I haven't ruled out having another baby yet! It'll be condoms for us for now. Who knows what longer term, I get migraines which seriously limits my choice.

Therealamandaclarke · 01/09/2013 08:24

Yes argy coils do Cary risks too. That's rather the point of the thread.
Which is why I want DH to get a vasectomy.
I can only assume he wants to keep his options open for starting a family with someone else one day.

I had the injection and it was part of my mental health break down earlier in the year.

So they don't bother with hormone things for me, I have the copper coil and it did make me bleed heavily but that is so much better than how I was feeling.

I had mine in for 6 months til I couldn't take it any longer. Was all prepared for a fight with Drs but she agreed straight off and I had the copper coil.
Much better, my periods are maybe a day or so longer than they used to be but are lighter and none of the other shit that came with Mirena.

And I asked to be sterilised and was told they don't do it unless they really have and it's "cheaper" to put coils in. I guess PTSD, PND and nearly dying as a result of childbirth aren't enough of a reason Angry Angry

I had no idea mirena had such side effects! I have one and I'm always irritable, shouty, irrational, appalling skin and the ability to Hoover a loaf of bread in under 5 minutes.

I guess mirena could be the cause? No idea what we would use instead, I do NOT want 4 DC's...

The copper coil is the only non-hormone, non-barrier method. We use condoms, cap is the other barrier option.

Report
ShowOfHands · 01/09/2013 09:58

You can't get a cap round here anymore. They are so uncommon that each of the hcps at the family planning clinic went too long without fitting one and are no longer qualified to do so. Copper coil didn't agree with me at all, can't do hormonal options so am using condoms. DH is booked in for his vasectomy!

Report
gintastic · 01/09/2013 09:58

Might have another little chat about vasectomy with DH...
