I saw this on an earlier thread (it gave the breakdown oh the vote by Party)

Do you think they
a) got cold feet
b) put the X in the wrong box as they couldn't see what they were doing as their Napoleon hat had slipped down over their eyes

Truly Confused - and I voted leave (hatless)

Gibraltar had over 200 votes for leave 😯

Who knows people's thought processes.

UKIP has always had quite a few people who did not want to leave the EU or did not want to do so yet.

For a lot of people, voting UKIP was mainly about immigration in their local area, and for others it was a sort of protest vote about feeling "left behind" pissed off with Labour but not seeing the conservatives as an option. Ford and Goodwin (two very good political writers who have written about the rise of UKIP) have discussed this at some length.

The Kippers who voted Remain most likely were thinking "Not yet/this is not the right time" OR they preferred to just wait for the EU to collapse by itself OR they were always more concerned about non-EEA migration and were in fact using a UKIP vote more as a form of protest.

And of course, you will always get some people who just tick the wrong box because they lack reading comprehension skills....

4% of the UKIP vote was to Remain...

The way I translated this statistic was:
We polled a number of people about how they voted in the last GE and in the EU Referendum. Of the 25 people who said they had voted UKIP, one voted to remain in the EU.

Nothing surprises me anymore, people are just very very strange. No need to try and analyse them because the world no longer makes sense
