I've got to do a 10 minute demonstration to college students on how to use the internet for research.

The demo can be on any subject of my choice - trouble is, my mind's a complete blank!! (no change there, then)

I've got a while b/4 the interview, but thought I'd ask you lovely lot for ideas.

I'm off line now for a while, as ds wants the computer, but any help will be gratefully received!!!

TIA!

What are they studying? Does it have to be relevant? Would you feel happier if it was something that you knew a bit about already?

It can be on a subject of my choice.

I've just looked at a short video of the college - it caters for A level (had 100% pass rate last year), 14 -16 y/olds from local community colleges, adults/19+, vocational and further training.

So, diverse.

The interview is for a job in the Learning Resources Centre (aka Library).

It might be better if I chose a subject I was familiar with, but it's more about how to research, rather than the subject.

Thanks to pinkteddy.

Anyone else?

I've just had a chat with my delightful dc's and they have given me heaps of ideas on using the internet for research, but no ideas for a subject.

Does it really matter what the subject is? Isn't the point that you could choose a subject at random - snowflakes leaps to mind - and because the internet is such a wonderful tool, and you have excellent googling skills and knowledge of useful information websites, that you could find out all you need to know about them in an instant.

Not suggesting snowflakes necessarily!

no, the subject could be anything - even

the mating rituals of the Pategonian Yak (if it exists), but I want these students to like me, it's possible there may be a poll afterwards - there is at the college where I already work, although the student's obviously don't have the final decision.

Pick something you know something about as at least you will be able to use appeopriate words to search

If you want the students to like you, mating rituals of the Pategonian Yak might be a good option...

i think I've decided to show them how to research going travelling for a gap year.

Lots of websites to research - trains, planes, boats, Home Office, prices, jobs, safety, hostels, etc.

I've got about 3 weeks to get it organised - a 10 minute talk is a looooong time, it'll feel like hours!

I'll post on here how it went....
