Notice periods? if you resign can they ask you to leave sooner?

If you give 4 weeks notice, can your boss ask you to only work 3 of them?

& would you get paid for the 4th or not?

if they ask you to leave earlier they have to pay you your full notice. so yes you should get paid for the 4th week and possibly any holiday outstanding iirc

They can ask you to only work 3 weeks but would have to pay you for the 4th otherwise you can insist on working all 4

Yes but they hae to pay you for the weeks you are "not allowed" to work.

It's called garden leave; you are still employed by the company and you are not allowed to start a new job until the notice period is over.

If you are going to a competitor, they may ask you to clear your desk the same day and walk you off site. They will pay you for the full four weeks though.

OK different question: If someone hands in their notice & it goes in to the next tax year by 2 days is there anyway to avoid setting up that person in the new tax year & having to do that paperwork?

The company can give you a lump sum payment in lieu of notice.

You can pay the person for the last two days in advance, so in the current tax year. Tax years relate to when payments are actually made, not when the payment relates to. As long as the payment is made on or before 5th April, it will be classed as 2007/08 tax year.
