i decided i needed a change of direction and changed jobs and careers

i landed a dream job working for wallis in their shoe concession.i think i was so focsed on the shoe side of things i didnt really realise what the job entailed and didnt receive my job description til a week ago 5 weeks after i started my job when i found it in my paperwork pile

i ttok the job thinking

it was just selling shoes it entails commission selling targets and lots of pressure which was neither mentioned or i feel renmerated with the wages they are paying .

i have had two anxiety attacks since i started one which has led to me being disciplined because i hadnt rang my area manager to let them know i was having an anxiety attack

i have bben off with d and v for the last week znd my store manager has been very insupportive and my area manager very supportive i have been signed off by the dr and i was asked to ring the store everyday to sort things out

any way im getting worked up about getting back to work tomorrow i had several nightmares last night about it im getting very worked up about it

can someone advise me

you've been signed off with d&v? when are you due back?

have you discussed with your manager that your job wasn't described properly to you? how long after you took the job did you see the job description? have you sat down with your manager to discuss what exactly your objectives are? have you done this type of work before? if not have you had training? or spent time with someone else who does the job?

it sounds like you may be able to put in a grievance.

like i said i didnt find out i was an actually a manager til my first day trainig of which i spent a week with another manager in store but it seems she was maybe to friendly and didnt really explain how serious the target side of things were i didnt find my job description til last week which was 5 weeks into the job and after i had a verbal warning for not ringing in

i was brutally honest about my anxiety and state of mind so i thought they may have been more considerate of this

i feel like im backed into a corner over this ??????

dressedup I thought I recognised you and a job at Wallis, you asked on a Style thread what to wear didn't you? I just searched to check it was you.

To be strictly fair, when you came out of the first interview you did say you will be shoe manager if you get the job...I was about to ask about not knowing that management responsibilities were involved beforehand but I see you did. I expect you didn't really realise what that meant in practice though.

I think they could and should have been more careful that you understood what managing a concession entailed before offering you the job, I agree that's a bit of a shame. Having been a retail manager myself I do think they are right to be strict about phoning in when you are not able to come into work - I know when I was a manager I was fully aware that if I didn't go in in would be a major struggle to even get the shop open, finding someone to get there who had the keys/ability to run things in my absence. Obviously if it's an in-store concession it won't be quite as drastic, and I don't know how many other people work on shoes, but I would think not very many?

You haven't been there very long at all, and whether or not they should have been clearer about what the job entailed before you started (which I agree they should have been) this is the reality of retail management, it does involve commission/targets and pressure. From your reaction to this I would say this may not be the job for you, and you may be best to cut your losses and find another career more suited to you.

It does sound like they haven't been especially supportive during your illness and given you appropriate training and guidance in your first couple of months in the job, so I agree their behaviour leaves a lot to be desired, but putting that to one side for a moment, think about the realities of the job - if you could get more support/training that wouldn't take away the targets/commission etc involved in the job, which I think might be the more significant problem here.

You could put in a grievance, but have a think first about what that would achieve. It would be stressful for you, which I don't think you need at the moment. The people involved might get a reprimand, you might get more training and support, but once you have gone through all that, you will still then be left with a job which with all the support in the world just might not be for you.
Have a think about what outcome you actually want from this situation - if it's a realistic one we can help you achieve it.

dressedup sorry to hear you are down. I do think this job probably isn't for you - some people just aren't motivated by monetary targets, myself included, which is why I left retail management myself and ended up in HR

I really really hope you don't take this to mean you can't cope with any job, that's not necessarily the case at all.

I'm glad your boss was understanding, that's good, and good the doctor's signed you off as well. Take the time to think carefully about what you enjoy doing/are good at and explore what your options might be.

Take care of yourself
