Is he on minimum wage?

yes i know this goes up at 18 - but its not enough to warrant getting rid of someone surely?

I knew a bloke (a dad of a girl I went to school with) who used to employ 16 year olds on a YTS scheme (shows you how long ago) and get rid of them as soon as the scheme was over with. He'd be happy with their work until just before the scheme came to an end and then make up a whole lot of stuff to justify not keeping them on. He was a complete and utter arse.

Sorry to be so random and take over your thread custy but it might be more to do with the length of time he's been there. Eg redundancy kicks in after 2 years.

Increased wage might be enough reason. Could be other things though. Seehere about young people at work.
How long has he been there? He gets more rights at a year for example -might be trying to avoid that?

Could it be that she's got a friend she wants to employ and is simply trying to force your son to resign so she doesn't have to to pay him wages in lieu of notice? How horrible

And at any employer who decides to undermine a young employee who is just at the beginning of their working life. I remember having some nasty employers when I was around that age.
