Anyone know what a Commercial Manager does?

I've been for a job interview today for a Sales Representative position. The interview went really well and based on my experience, they would like me to go back to talk to them about a more senior Commercial Manager job. It sounds great but a bit in the dark and am really keen to get a better understanding of what this type of position would entail before my next interview. Does anyone know what a commercial manager does or can you point me to a web site that might help?

Thanks in advance!

Think it depends on the type/size of company really but in my experience in an old job i had our Commercial Manager was in charge of the commercial department which was responsible for all quotes/bids that were sent out as each was very detailed and involved project management as well as goods supplied. commerical manager allocated any ITT's (Invitations to Tender) and co ordinated all the departments required to produce the bid or tender. Hope that makes sense? but as i said could be different for different companies but that would be the basics at least i would imagine! good luck by the way!

Oh and a commercial department usually process all orders that come into the company and allocated the relevant commission to the sales people. Would also have some sort of system for keeping track of order values to advise to sales managers/directors - will probably keep thinking of things but could go on all night but i wont

At my retail distribution site its basically a qualified accountant. He puts figures together in report form on a daily basis for labour and transport costs, hours used/lost, absence costs, overtime etc.

He also prepares monthly summaries, deals with all purchasing and invoicing. Looks at ways of saving costs like re negotiating agency fees
