I currently work through an agency, but the office moved 20 miles further away from where I live and in doing so they seemed to lose all the local places I used to work in. Now every place I work in is over 20 miles away from where I live and I don't get a mileage allowance.
So I went for an interview for a permanent job 15 miles away from my house. I was interviewed by the area manager of the company. It went really well and she offered me a job on the spot, but pointed out that they also had a site nearer to where I live and suggested I looked round it to see if that would suit me better. She phoned that place up while I was still with her and we arranged with the manager a time for me to visit, which was immediately after I finished voluntary work I do, which is along similar lines to the paid work (it's how I got into this type of work, I started doing it as a volunteer first). It can get quite messy, so I was wearing casual clothes, when I went there, whereas I was smartly attired for the first interview. On arrival, the manager sat me down in her office and proceeded to interview me - one or two of the questions were even the same as those in the previous interview with the area manager! In hindsight, I should have spoken up there and then to say that I was only there to look around as I had already been interviewed, but I was confused, so just went along with it. Anyway, I've received an email saying that on this occasion I haven't been successful. I wonder if they thought I wasn't a serious candidate as I'd turned up in jeans.
I'm really confused as to what to do now. Obviously I want the original job - that's the one I applied for, I was offered it and I don't mind that it's 15 miles away. To be honest, I preferred that place to the other one as well, though it would have been nice to work locally for a change. But how do I go about accepting it without either
a) letting the area manager know that the manager who turned me down had forgotten what had originally been agreed, or
b) seeming to hide the fact that I've been turned down by the second place? I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Thank you for reading this far!
