Does anybody have experience of having to get rid of someone because the job just wasn't right for them?

Keeping the details vague I have a member of staff who is only interested in doing one aspect of the role (which happens a handful of times a year for a week each time). The rest of the time their performance is mediocre with minimum effort and repeated niggles and mistakes, despite having processes and procedures explained to them on more than one occasion.

The feedback I get from colleagues and customers is poor too.

They had a verbal warning which hasn't made much difference and my boss's suggestion is to put them on 3 months' notice and support them during that time to look for a new job. I would rather make it quick than draw it out, could still offer a couple of month's salary.

They have been with the company for less than 2 years.
