My 86 year old MIL lives in NW1 and would dearly love to meet like-minded people. She is intelligent (ex history teacher), into philosophy, Shakespeare and enjoys political debates. Does anyone know of any book clubs, social groups, friendly relatives (!) who she could meet up with for tea, chats, short walks, company.......!

Can she get to her local library and find out what is available locally? What about the WEA, they have very interesting lectures and debates. How active is she? My parents go to lectures at the LSE, very intellectually stimulating.

Hi! Yes, have checked library - evening book clubs not great for single OAP. She is an LSE alumni so probably knows about the lectures. She used to attend U3A but it's the journey on her own which she finds daunting. I think she would be a lot more active if she had a friend(s) to go out with! Thanks for your suggestions though, will keep looking.

Do age uk do anything locally? Couldn't she pay someone to take her out? Advertise in people's friend?
