A new series of celebrities in the classroom. They have two weeks to get themselves ready.
Tonight it's Janet Street-Porter, Tamara Beckwith?? and Barry from Eastenders (forget his name). It's called So you think you can teach? Supposed to be quite entertaining.

I read an article about it in the Sundat Torygraph.....not mine, I was in a health club waiting for ds to come from a party!

JSP said that teachers are woth more than they are paid, that every parent should spend a day in a state primary and then vote! What she couldn't belive was the amount of 'stuff' teachers have to do that have nothing to do with teaching the three Rs etc. That teachers have to teach kids how to have a conversation, cos the parents never talk to the kids. Apparanetly TB doesn't know her times tables

Some teachers are worth far more (ds's so far). Others (dd's for example) are not, sadly.

programmes like this are so patronising, IMO. I am a secondary school teacher and have been since 1992.Letting some rich celeb ' teach ' for two weeks is a bit like the way the Tories would, every so often, get one of their MPs to live on benefits for a week. Then they would say ' well we managed it ok so what are you complaining about? and then they would get back into their jags or mercs and book 2 weeks in Biarritz.....the other thing is there are tv cameras in the classroom the whole time so it's so staged it's a joke. Oh yes, I bet the kids will be ' just like their normal selves' - NOT.

Agree that it is hardly 'normal'. But the school is one of the most deprived in the area, is imporving with a new head. JSP was horrified at the amount of caring and councelling that the teachers were expected to do, because so many of the parents didn't care IYSWIM. Her over riding comment was that the teachers were amazing and the education system dreadfully underfunded. Not patronising at all

From the blurb about the programme, it seems as if they found it far from easy.

Sadly can't get Channel 5, but as an ex-primary school teacher myself, it is probably just as well because I wouldn't like to see celebs having a go at my profession. As the Sunday Times said, What next? A programme entitled So you think you can perform an appendectomy?

well I watched a bit of it and found it risible as well as painful.Janet S-P whinging and complaining about what she was supposed to teach and that blond woman passing around copies of 'Hello' magazine as a teaching resource. It made a mockery of the work proper teachers do as far as I can see. Anyway like Lonelymum said it'll be so called ' celebrities' performimg life saving operations next, because apparently if you are famous you can do anything!!

Watching them saying how tiring it is and the crap pay is really bringing it home to me that teaching might not be for me anymore. I dont want to be tired all the time with crap pay if there is another life out there.....

One year pgce does not teach you everything that they think. It is a struggle no matter how much training you have.
