Ok so all prior threats dont really address what is the probability of clearing the watilist if you are still waiting for your son to enter in the fall and it is mid march. Please can people reply who were either on the waitilist or who decided in March to choose the other school and when these decisions were made and if you are still on the waitlist when you eventually heard one way or the other. thank you.

My DS was promoted from the wait list at the start of March, when there is usually some movement due to people making their final decision about schools at the end of February. There is also the famous incident of the boy who got a place on the first day of term (when he was unpacking at Harrow!) Only you can know how long you are prepared to hold out and carry on waiting.

The only people who can really give you any accurate information at this point are the Admissions office, if you haven't done so already you do need to ring them and ask them what your chances are.

Given march is the deadline to commit to who is marking CE I'd have thought there would be a few places shaking out around now

In some years very few people drop out of the A list but it is still worth trying. Keep calling the Admissions Tutor to check the status of your file. DS was in the top tier list, i.e. in the top 20, from when it was formed but did not get promoted until early May with some other boys. Keep pushing and have your prep school try on your behalf too. Best of luck!

The KS exams will be held next half, so up to 14 places will become available in May, as boys who now hold conditional places win scholarships. The Admissions office will be able to tell you how near the top of the list your DS is, and if it's likely he will be promoted during this next movement.

thank you for all those who have responded. IndridCold why would a promotion to Scholarship freeup a place? Isnt there 240 places in total? or does it expand when the scholarship spots are allocated?

Most scholars will already have places in (Oppidan) houses. The King's Scholars go into College. So when a boy who has a place in a house gets a KS, his original place becomes available.

I wonder though to what degree they pre-offer a few of those as there are boys around who have cleared the list but don't have houses. They can't do it for all 12 of course because some of the wild-card boys might get a place.

Yes, I suspect you are right Michaelah, which is why I stand by my original advice to Ring Admissions.

My DS just heard from Eton that he is in the top tier wait list band for entry 2017. I'm told this means his chances of getting in are now very good.

Does anybody have any more information about this?

Well, you could hear at any time as people drop out for various reasons. However, the first big movement will be end of Feb, as this is when parents who are holding places at more than one school have to make the final decision.

If your son has any particular successes, school prizes etc, don't forget to let Admissions know about it!
