Have you got a tumble dryer? That might make a difference. If you can wash and dry stuff overnight, you'll need fewer items.

Minimum IMO:
2 pr trousers
5 polo shirts
2 sweatshirts

We have:
2 sweatshirts (can often be worn more than once)
3 polo shirts (wear out quite quickly and get absolutely filthy)
2 pairs trousers/2 pairs shorts (again, can often be worn more than once, though not in this weather)
1 PE kit (shorts and T-shirt - it stays in school all the time though)

I buy for ds

1 short trouser (for the few nice days left!)
3 trousers (he always manages to rip a pair and one will be in the wash!)
3 long sleved shirts
3 polo shirts
1 shirt sleved shirt
2 gym shorts9 they get gym every day)
2 gym t shirts
2 school sweatshirts
multi coloured socks and pants (because his socks and pants are the only part that doesnt have to conform)
gym shoes
school shoes

Hope this can help X

Buy the shorts in the size he'll need next summer. They'll be fine for September and still be OK for next year too.

If you can, get the teflon coated shorts/trousers - with a damp cloth you can wipe off the less serious stains and get a second day out of them. Definitely get shorts to fit next year - my ds only wore them for a couple of weeks last September because his legs felt cold once the weather started to cool down. if possible I would get at least 3 of each thing, that way if you don't get a wash on and fully dried any day, you won't be stuck. I have 5 or 6 polo shirts but they are white and get absolutely filthy so have to be changed each day. I generally only do a white wash once a week so need a week's supply.

After having my daughters, and them staying clean all week and only changing half-way at my own insistance, twas a shock when DS started school.....

he goes thro it all every day and so needs at least three changes a week, more if I am unable to keep up with washing thro illness etc.

Got two boys as of this september, and there are no hand-me-downs from DS1 either as he goes thro the knees and also stains everyhting.

2 pairs trousers - if they don't get obviously dirty he wears them all week .
4 white shirts - my kids have a clean shirt every other day unless they have marks on them - Woolies sell them in packs of 2 and as they need more than 2 I had to buy 2 packs.
2 jumpers - same as trousers.
Loads of socks.
1 pair PE shorts and 1 shirt - they usually only need them once a week.

When he started school I bought tons of stuff but most of it was never used. So I just buy the minimum now.

Until summer ds got on fine with 3 shirts, as the sweatshirt gets the brunt of anything and marks don't show up as much on it. But, come summer and not wearing the sweatshirt as much, the shirts end up on the front line and he needs a fresh one every day. Sometimes I wonder what he's doing, as home shirts can last several days (he's generally an unfeasibly clean boy) - sliding around the floor on his tummy?

Trousers with Teflon a very good idea!

Also shop around for a good deal - Asda and Tescos are good for shirts, John Lewis for trousers - and buy the next size up as well. Ds started September in age 3 trousers (he's slender and short of leg), but was in age 5 trousers by the end of the spring term, at which time all uniform items are full-price, if available at all.

depends on how fond you are of washing/ironing! You CANNOT have too many polo shirts. my boys' come home filthy every day despite painting aprons etc. So I have 6 shirts each so I only have to do a school uniform wash at the weekend. In fact sometimes, one ds manages to get breakfast all down his clean shirt so hence the 'extra' one. Obv if it's colder, the jumpers bear the brunt of muck! IME, trews get a little less dirty. Also, one of my boys is dyslexic, and very scatty. We are forever 'losing' jumpers, as he forgets to pick them up after playtime etc. So though we usually get reunited with the lost items eventually, we have extra jumpers too. (we have a 2nd-hand uniform shop at school which is a godsend, jumpers 50p etc)

Our school polo shirts are blue, so I do a mixed colours wash every day! I don't iron any of the school uniform though - I line dry in the summer and tumble dry in the winter and it's not too creased.
