Hi, I have 5 year old dd and I think she is very able in the academic subject, but she s in state school and they don't much work, so I want to prepare her for entry exam. Would anyone please let me know, what do I need to do to help her out? Thank you in advance.

I don't know how you can possibly tell a 5 year old is very able academically. Education professionals do not regard any form of assessment of ability before the age of 6\7 as reliable. LEH are looking for potential not cramming "preparation" so why not just encourage your DD to read and enjoy learning. I know of several girls who joined LEH juniors from state schools without being "prepared" though it was suggested one should read more widely over the summer holidays.they know what they are looking for in girls that will enable them to thrive there.

Although that said most of the girls who take the LEH exam (for 7+ entry) are prepared in the feeder prep schools - for example Jack and Jill school ... my dd was in a state school and I did some Bond maths papers with her which got her to the standard for maths for LEH but I left English as she was good at it ... and she didn't get in on that I was told (and she has always been a very keen reader). The level they are looking for on comprehension was quite high and not just answering basic questions on a paragraph of copy ... the head told me to come back and try again in January ... but I'd sent her to another school by then ... and decided it wasn't fair to put a 7/8 year old through that twice!

Pixel - when you say the level of comprehension was quite high - could you elaborate please?

We've done (struggled with) inference questions but not sure what more to expect?

Sorry I don't know what inference questions are - and I'm a journalist with a degree ... so it would surely be ridiculous for a 7 year old to know??!!! They are looking for a higher level than you get in Bond (I know this because I then got in tough with a tutor who used to work at LEH) ...at the time my DD did the exam there were 4 of them from state schools and no-one got in ... though as someone else says some girls seem to have better luck at 11+. Reading widely is certainly important - DD has always read for pleasure every day but then (at 6) it was a lot of Jacqueline Wilson and not much else! You need books that will stretch your DD's vocabulary and use of language ...

Pixel - thank you for your input. A touch late though, as the assessments were today! Smile

Anyways they had a long but simple passage (no memory of questions tho!), so I guess it should have been alright?!

FWIW - inference means questions based on deduction/ understanding where the answer is not in the passage, rather is based on the readers interpretation & understanding of the passage.
(Eg, A's father is going to take up the matter with the police.
Question: how do you think A's father felt?) -this excerpt is from Bond 7-8 BTW!

Anyways, now fingers crossed. Thank you for replying.

Hi , would you know when the results will be out?

I think at some point in Feb. I am trying not to think of specific dates or I might harass the postman.

Am also waiting on other schools so driving myself a bit mad already with 'what if' analysis!

Oh Gosh...I hear they had 300 applicants for LEH 7+ this year. I wonder how true that is. Results could be out as last as Feb half term...now that is a really long wait ! Also waiting on GHS results. The wait is horrible !

I would find 300 hard to believe. The seating chart had about 20 names per sheet & there were 4-5 sheets in total. Unless there were other days of testing am sure there were not more than 100.

Maybe am delusional! Grin

SwimmingMom...fingers crossed ..I hope you are right ! However I hear this year Wimbledon High and GHS have had a very high number of applicants for limited places and I suspect that LEH may be higher than 100. Good luck with the waiting and results !

There's always a second sitting date at LEH and I expected there to be c 180 in total. I heard the 300 figure banded around at the school gate but didn't believe it..
