Hmmm, and I can't type - must remember to use preview more often - that should of course be 'Does anyone have experience of peer mediation in schools?'

My dd's primary school appointed something like 'friendship monitors', who had one break each week when they wore a special badge, and spent playtime by the bench. Anyone who felt sad or lonely, or wanted a chat, would know someone was there to spend time with.

Very simplistic, but I thought it was a lovely idea.

Are you thinking of something more in depth?

A school near me used a company to train a group of children for p.m. last year. They gave a demostration of their new skills at a meeting and they were brilliant!! The teachers chose a mixture of good and 'challenging' children to be mentors. I would love our school to do it because the transformation in the children were amazing, but the cost is too high.

DD is Yr10, & at her school Yr10 &11 run The Smile Club, where younger kids can go at break/lunchtimes if they are having any probs, bullying, work worries etc - rather than seeing teacher. They have their regulars who just like to have somewhere to go, & they are all given a particular child to mentor who is viewed as being "At risk" of being bullied.

They also help with the Yr7's who cannot read properly

Thanks all
Who does the training? How much does it cost the school? How long does it last?
Anybody from the Leeds area with any local info about peer mediation?

Puddingz, I would be interested in hearing more about the peer mediation at the school near you - or indeed anyone else who has experience of this.

The training is run by the LEa behaviour support team in our school. Year 6 run it at lunchtimes. They mediate between two children who are having a disagreement

Hi Donk, the peer mediation was provided by a local company, who I believe, were an approved provider for the service. They worked in the school providing intenstive training sessions (I think 2/3 weeks?)for the meds and then gave the school regular support sessions. The cost was about £2,000. Yes honest! but the results were amazing!!!!
