Good books for a 6 year to read on her own.

Hi, My daughter is a few days from her 6th birthday and just (v. hesitantly) taking her first steps into reading non picture books and I want to encourage her. I bought her "My naughty little sister" book yesterday and she's read 5 chapters already. She's enjoying the book and at this rate will be through it in the next few days. The books from my childhood are great i.e. enid blyton, Narnia etc but there seems to be soooo many more. Can anyone suggest some good ones. I've read some bits out of the "Naughty little sister" book and its not exactly edge of the seat thriller or roll around funny!

well, you probably won't like them but the Rainbow Fairies and the Secret Unicorn are almost universally popular at that age (also to be fair, they have reasonably short chapters and a simple plot!).

my dd1 is 8y and i know that when she was about 6 and started reading she had the secret unicorn books and enjoyed them . i find anything that has fairies and princesses are always good anything that your dd is interested in .
also going to the school book fair always helps as they have the books sorted into age and have the most popular ones there that kids are reading at the moment.

DD1 will be 6 in May and is a big fan of the Naughtiest Girls (Enid B I know but hey). She has also devoured the Horrid Hendry series (bought by DH I should add as I think they are awful). The Rainbow Faires series, of which there are loads, too.

To be fair she really just started re-reading the books we had bought over the last 18 months or so to re-aloud to her and this has worked well. Yesterday bought the Killer Underpants and she hasn't put it down this morning. Take her to a book shop if possible and maybe let her have a rummage?

Oh aye a got a couple of Secret Unicorn ones at the school book fair and she liked those too.

Defn positive on the short chapters. Not sure I'm terribly worried about expanding her literacy capacity just over the moon to see her reading books on her own. I still loose myself in a good book and its wonderful to think that she's starting to discover this herself. My concern with the "Naughtly little sister" (and a bit nervous I'm going to get shot for this) is that they're boring. Want to get a couple for her birthday. many thanks

My dd is seven and has just started her first 'proper' sort of book on her own. She seems to like Roald Dahl and is getting on really well with George's Marvellous Medicine.
