Best private schools in east yorks/Hull

Thinking of sending my DCs to Hymers/ Pocklington or Collegiate. Anyone got any views on these 3 schools? There was a similar thread a while back but anyone else got anything to add?

I've heard better things of Collegiate than I have of Hymers, but, unfortunately, I have no personal experience of either!

I've never understood about the "good grades" that a school needs to get. If your child is clever enough, they will succeed in their exams wherever they go,surely? You can lead a horse to water and all that...

I can see the appeal rainydays; longer school days, huge grounds and so on. But a school would have to be pretty amazing (and I'd have to be VERY well off) for me to shell out £20k a year on it.

I always wonder why people exclude the entire state sector when choosing schools. It's strange.

I can totally understand why op is looking to educate dcs in independent schools. I can highly recommend Scarborough college . Excellent exam results and good music, sport etc. Transport from brid and driffield .

hymers much better than collegiate imo, (very limited experience to be fair as really outside travelling range from here)

I'm sure the OP would consider state school in the area if there was much choice and if they were any good. Sadly, the local senior schools are not that great. I've heard good things about Hymers.

My daughter has just finished 10 years at Hymers (just about to start her A2 exams) and I can't recommend it highly enough. She has loved every minute of her time there and has done exceptionally well academically. It's also very strong on music and sports. I hear good things about Collegiate, too.

I was OP on earlier thread. Further digging around friends / contacts and the Collegiate is no longer on our list of potentials.

Between the other two as ever it comes down to what your child will benefit from. Hymers has the more academic reputation and IMO certainly the stronger 6th form (gazing into distance). However, they have an arrangement now with Froebel & Hessle Mount that their kids will transfer across without sitting the entrance exam. So, is it still as academically selective as it was and will results be maintained ? Pocklington seems good at addressing the learning needs of individuals, lot of talk of time in very small groups if required, strong dyslexia support etc also v good music & sports.

I have 2 kids at Hymers and sadly would not recommend it at all. Poor quality of teaching in some subjects, poor behaviour management and lack of pastoral care are my reasons. I think in the past it may have been an excellent school, but it feels like it is in decline now.

The school 'lost' a number of teachers mid-term last year and, on reading the mini biogs supplied by the school, the replacements seemed to have been picked more for their sporting abilities than for their teaching experience, which I find a bit worrying.

I have friends who have kids at Collegiate and they are full of praise for it. I have also heard good things about Pocklington.

Heard the new Head at Collegite is making some good changes. Caring nurturing school with well rounded pupils.
