Got my sixth form to peel some potatoes today (surface area vs volume ratios for anyone interested ) NONE of them could do it. None of them had ever peels a sud.

How the F can you get to 16 without having peeled a spud??????

What are we doing by raising such inept kids??????

my god dd is 3 and one of her hobbies is peeling spuds and carrots!

How bizarre. Do you think their mothers are all control freaks or they live on ready meals?

Oh I've tried to resist but I can't....

Sixth formers didn't know how to peal a spud!

And their teacher didn't know how to spell it!

Pmsl (I know you can spell it really...)

Shocking. No wonder they're leaving home later these days.

I thought they came peeled and washed and in bags. Do you really have to peel them?

confession... I'm c**p at peeling spuds with a knife. I can do it with a peeler, but with a knife I always end us taking too much spud away and/or cutting myself.

FiT - -when I was 17 (many yrs ago) I remember watching in fascination as my older married cousin halved the size of a potato whilst "peeling" it with a knife

Report
foundintranslation · 28/11/2005 18:11

I reckon I can quarter the size of it iota

I cannot peel a potato with a knife, not sure whether it's to do with being left handed, but always have to use a peeler.

Report
iota · 28/11/2005 18:16

left handed -- don't they make left-handed knives then

I can't remember last time I peeled a potato!

Thanks to MN I have a potato ricer, so my mash is done by microwaving spuds with their skin on. And I always leave the skins on when baking or making oven baked chips/wedges.

This lot wouldn't know a potato ricer if it bit them on the arse!

I can't peel a spud with a knife. Would chop off a finger.

I was at university with a bloke who thought you heated soup up by putting the tin in the microwave. Without opening it first.

Fortunately, I stopped him before he actually did it...

Phew... so glad I read to the top of this thread. I can't peel a spud with a knife either (have always blamed left-handedness). But could certainly do it with a peeler by the age of about 7. Have a distinct memory of having to do it in order to get a Brownie badge! Shocking!

NannyL · 28/11/2005 20:03

i too can ONLY peel with a peeler (if you wnat an of the vegetable left afterwards!)

I was in halls with a girl who after 3 wks of leaving all her dirty clothes on the floor asked the woman who cleaned the toilets why the maid kept missing her room as no one had collected her laundry yet!

We laughed at that one all year. (Her father was a cabinet minister at the time)
