Hi Trace2

I've just got one of these too for DD (born May 2002).

I think it's for starting school next September.

if you're in England, then he can start reception in September 2006 although some schools only take summer born children in the January (so Jan 2007)

Depends on what area you're in. Ds was born June 2001, and has started this week, so here your ds would start next September (i.e. September 2006). Wouldn't have thought he would start before that tbh.

if its next sept he will be only 4y 3m, so he must start 2007 then, this is really confusing

they are usually 4 when they start, so they turn 5 while they are in reception. i meant that they dont have to start then if you dont want them to

what area are you in trace?

children in England start reception in the school year they turn 5 (running from Sep 1 to 31 Aug) so theoretically a child could be 4 and 1 day and still start reception.

Many schools choose to have 2 intakes, 1 for the older children (who start in September) and 1 for the younger children (normally those born after 1 April) who start in January. BUT this is entirely dependent on the local education authority and the individual school. There should be info on this in your pack.

It's 'rising 5's' so you start the year in which you turn 5. In our area you can delay it until the term after they are 5, but they won't hold a school place for you, so basically you have to start in September. But it is really different across the country.

easiest thing to do is ring the school you want him to go to. they will tell you everything you need to know. i also found that not every school sticks religiously to what is in the booklet so no point in reading through something that may not be accurate

trace2, he'd start Reception sometime during the academic year 2006/7. So that may be September 2006, or January 2007 or possibly after Easter for a June b'days, depending on LEA and individual school policies. You'd have to apply now even if he doesn't start until after Christmas next year.

My dd2 was born sept 2001 so should be sorting this soon.
Next years reception intake wil be born between septmber 2001 and August 2002.

In a lot of areas children go part-time until the term in which they turn five (nightmare if you work), so in our area your son would start next September (2006) and be part-time for two terms, then full time after Easter. Remember legally you don't have to send him until after Easter and I'm pretty sure that if you are offered a place from September they have to hold it for you if you want. This has changed in the last few years as previously schools didn't have to do this. The only problem I can see is if you wanted to claim the early years education grant in a different setting - as far as I know the reason schools are now happy to keep a place is that they will get the funding for your son from the September even though he won't start until later. This might be different in your area though.

Trace, we have also received the pack from LEA. We are in Doncaster, and DD was also born June 2002. There is only one intake - September 2006 is when DD is due to start. I too didn't have a clue about local schools. I have visited two schools before summer hols. I have rung up further local schools and have made appointments to go in and have a look round.

I haven't had a pack from the LEA, yet. I have an August 2002 baby. I'll be wanting to get her into a school that is out of catchment so should I press the LEA for a pack now ?

I would ring them up MDP - I had to. The cut off date for applications for 2006/2007 intake is 18 November 2005 here!
