Child maintenance payments in divorce settlement

My STBXH and I are trying to come to an amicable settlement ourselves, and I just want to know, I am receiving just above the basic payment for my 3 DCs, he's staying in the house (I moved out because he refused to) do I ask him to pay a set amount that he has been paying until they're 18 or should he be upping it periodically with regards to inflation, his wages rising, cost of living etc?

We have been advised to set it as one amount ongoing for dsc's unless there is a significant change in circumstances ie. Dp and I have more kids or his job changes. Make sure you both take out life insurance that covers the maintenance up to age 21 (in case go to. Uni) in case the worst happens.
