Financial settlement and mortgage liability

I left my exH 3 years ago, due to his alcohol problem and abusive nature, with my 3 young DCs. Several months before I left, I quit my job, after a bout of depression, and I no longer contributed to the mortgage. We are now trying to sort out finances, and he states I owe £9000ish in unpaid mortgage and insurance.

When I left I took out a tenancy, and was paying £750 PCM on rent. He started paying maintenance several months after I left.

Whilst I understand the mortgage was a joint liability, I wasn't paying before I left.

Seeing my solicitor next week to discuss, but would appreciate any advice etc, thanks.
