Challenge...No More Shopping Until The Freezer is Empty!

Ruprekt · 11/12/2013 07:41

This is what I am going to do.

Apart from Christmas food, I am going to empty the freezer and fridge and not buy anything else at all.

Children do not mind odd combinations so I am going for it.

Got lots of veg, mil and bread.

Will buy more milk if necessary.

Anyone else up for it? SmileSmileSmileSmileThanks

I really must use up some freezer stuff. Not even sure whats in there. Need to make room for a delivery arriving on friday. Then we will have even more that will keep us going for a while.

Beef stir fry tomorrow - got all sorts of stuff in the fridge for that.

Does anyone know anything about freezing fresh herbs? I have loads in the fridge at the moment just wilting!! what should i be doing with them??

Watching with interest. We currently have a chest freezer (about the size of a regular fridge) at my Dparents' house that we need to move over to our new house (lived with them for a few months before moving here).

However, I am planning to go to Tesco just before closing on Christmas Eve, to see what bargains I can bag (if the hours don't clash with the carol service, anyway).

DSes having Little Dish ready meals tonight that I bought for 56p each, as DS1 has swimming & DS2 has nursery party, so we won't be home till after 6 & that is late to cook anything. Not sure for DH & I, may use rainbow trout fillets, anybody got any ideas for that?

Shnicky, I freeze fresh herbs all the time. They still taste the same, they just aren't crisp when they come out of the freezer, rather soggy even, but taste fine in cooked dishes. I just stick them in the freezer in their packet, or in tubs if no packet.

Got lots of veg, mil and bread

You're eating your mother in law. Things must be tough Grin

Sorry, couldn't resist. I have done this before and had some really weird combinations but a brilliant idea and helps to get rid of things that have been lurking at the back for ages.

Whatnamenext, with your frozen kidney beans you could try A Girl Called Jacks carrot, cumin and kidney bean burgers if you've got the odds and sods in the stock cupboard.

Can I join in please? Tomorrow I plan To look through and see what's in there so that I can try To plan. I know I have sausages but DH can't eat Those as now knows he's gluten intolerante. Which is a pain because he bought loads from a friend who hand makes them at scary prices. I also have prawns which only I eat so will have Those Tomorrow, DDs away with school.

Who was Asking about herbs? I just bung them in then crumble into a dish as it's cooking. They Go limp so not brillante for salads once frozen.

We're finishing up rolls/crackers for breakfast.

DD has tuna and sweet corn (not to early for her apparently)

The boys have had leftover chicken and crackers.

Bizarre!

We had trout and sprout once on a similar epic skint-freezer-clearing mission. We now have it on New Year's Eve every year in remembrance and DH has to invent a new sauce to go with it.

Today we had a tasting menu of various single portion delights - DS said it was the best meal EVER. Tomorrow we will start attacking the jacket potato mountain. Incredibly all the drawers now slide open without tugging and jamming and I might even defrost the thing when schools go back.

Great thread. Our last tesco delivery was on Monday and we've agreed not to get another til 1st Jan - we never normally go that long!

We hugely overbought snacky bits Xmas Hmm and have only just finished the turkey this lunchtime. DH roasted a chicken we'd had in the freezer and today we had pasta with shredded roast chicken, chorizo, onion and tomato, it was lovely!

Tomorrow I'm thinking of making a similar tomatoey sauce with chorizo but cooking eggs in it.

Not actually sure what else we've got in the freezer so I'll have to check. TBF there's not usually much room for actual food except my Ben and Jerry's which I'm not giving up no way as it takes more than one whole drawer to store DH's bread - he's coeliac and they only prescribe bread in 8 loaf batches, which are usually very short dated by the time they arrive Angry. I tend to freeze my/DCs bread products too as we don't eat much and it goes stale/mouldy if kept on the counter.

Do you all have a lot of store cupboard/canned things BTW? I admit I've been stockpiling due to fear of snow (no car/illness means trudging through the snow is Not An Option) but it's not so much of a problem as canned stuff keeps much longer than freezer food which can get frost bitten (or is that just us Confused)

I'm doing it for the whole of Jan. Only buy bread, milk and fresh fruit. Around €15 per week. Other than that we eat from cupboards and freezer.
