I think thats known as a chemical pregnancy?...but never develops, and you get you AF soon after, most women wouldn't even know usually. The hormones start to kick in, but no baby develops, if that makes sense??.
I would go and get that coil checked tho...mine came out, so wouldn't fully trust one again x

AF is your period - have you had your period start since the positive pregnancy test?

A chemical pregnancy is a miscarriage in the very early stages of pregnancy, so it might seem like your period is only a few days late. Because the pregnancy ends early it never shows up on a scan.

Don't know much about the coil sorry but please be careful, I think there may be higher chance of an ectopic pregnancy with it. When did you have a scan and when did you get the positive pregnancy test?

I had one last year. My period was late I got preg symptoms and decided to do a test in a few days, couple of days later I started to spot and did test to check (it was neg). The next day I started to bleed and pass products that could only mean misscarriage. I would of been 6 1/2 weeks preg. Docs and nurses were concerned that I had a coil but didn't really believe me despite the fact I graphically described what I had seen (I had handled it to check I was seeing what I thought I was). The next day I spent 4hrs at hosp being checked over as in real pain despite the fact the bleeding had stopped. They then decided it was an infected ectopic and I was issued with masses of antibiotics and pain killers. Pain went on for 2 months and I was eventually scaned but it showed nothing. That was begining of Nov, coil has stayed in, has caused no problems and has remained effective as contrception.

I got the impression that they don't really know a great deal about how it happens, why it happens or how to deal with it etc. Although their standard response was that you can't get pregnant with a coil.
I think you have to trust your gut feelings as to what you think has happened and go easy on yourself for a while.

Hope you are back to normal soon and you recover smoothly.

I've heard of people getting pregnant with coil - also, you can get a positive test result and nothing will show on scan for several weeks - did they do your blood tests for your HCG hormone levels?

confusedmummie · 08/05/2010 18:24

thanks for the comments and no no blood tests was done they treat yhou like crap in there they treat you like a list get em in get em out sort of thing with no help for mixed emotions because i would like another child got 1 at 10 months old but 1 min they say im preg next im not thats why i asked here if any 1 has had the same or no about it, im going to try doing some home preg kits myself soon because it is very strange to have a false positive isnt it?

I'm fine

but ... I completely know what you mean about the mixed emotions and them offering no support. We would of loved another but had given up trying when I misscarried the previous year, however instead of morning all my thoughts and feelings had to be channelled into getting them not to treat me like a raving loney,it's so wrong.

As far as I am aware they don't normally scan before 6 weeks as it doesn't show up before then. So ... if you are less than 6 weeks they could of missed it and it would be woth doing some more tests over the next few weeks. I would not rule preg out untill your period comes. Where are you in your cycle?

On the positive side from what I read ectopics often don't show +ve preg tests, so the fact you got one would mean if you are preg it is unlikely to be ectopic.

to be honest i think im ment to be on my period this week! but not too sure because the coil is ment for 2 tjhings, stopping you getting pregnant and stopping your periods great at the time i thought but at a time like this i would love to know when i should be on lol well if i am preg ill be so excited because i love children have 1 already (definatly hardwork) but if im not then i dont think ill ttc untill a planned pregnancy, im glad your fine about the loss now beacause i look at my girl and think how sad it would be to lose 1 and how ppl are great when it comes to being strong!! well done

Ahh you have the hormonal coil, mine is just the copper one. Hormonal one is supposed to be even more effective!

There is no getting around it is sad, I have a friend with a child that was born when our first loss was due and a friend that is due when our second loss would of been due, so constant reminders. I have down times, but I have my 3 lovely boys so am still a very lucky lady.

I have my fingers crossed for you that either you aren't preg or you are and the coil doesn't interfere (if you are they will ask you to decide whether to leave the coil in or to take it out). Do you have any preg symptoms?

They really aren't very nice; I believe a false positive test is unlikely. I had a positive test when we were TTC with DD and some pains, had an internal scan and there was nothing, nasty scan woman announced loudly "you're not pregnant", I said I believe I am; another midwife did another test and it was also positive; that's when they did blood tests (have to go back 2 days later, if HCG roughly doubles, it's +ve, if it goes down, there's been miscarriage and if it stays roughly the same, possible ectopic - as I was told at the time).

A week later (and positive blood test) and they were able to see a teeny tiny sac on scan - by then, I was 7 weeks, so they couldn't see it at all at 6.....

Good luck, hope you get the result that works out best for you (if that makes sense!)

yeah makes sense thanks people the only sign ive had is sickness sometimes and tingly nips, dunno if that a symptom? and they did say at the scan she said if i was to be preg the baby should be fine and i also said about having the coil removed if i was and they said absolutly not because it would cause a abortion or miscarriage however i would look at it i spose that is true beause the coil is in the uterus and would act as a plug if you know what i mean? but i thought id would be uncomfortable for a baby wouldnt you say? it is sad when there is reminders but hey! you got 3 of the most precious things in the world and maybe more 1 day

Hi. I really think you need to get this looked into properly as just doing a scan really isn't good enough care.

I would recommend either going to your GP, or finding your nearest Early Pregnancy Unit and going to them. Link here www.earlypregnancy.org.uk/FindUs1.asp

They ought to do blood tests to see if you are pregnant or not. There is a higher chance of an ectopic pregnancy if you have the coil, so they should be keeping an eye on you. Not just scanning and then leaving you to it!

You ought to get your blood tested for HCG levels to see if they're increasing or not, and then getting a repeat scan once they're high enough that something ought to show up. Just to check everything is where it ought to be.

Please go and demand more care. Ectopic pregnancy is very serious. The likelihood is it's not ectopic, but the doctors ought to be making sure they know that.

Good luck!
