had a 21 day blood test last month which showed i was not ovulating. was referred for a ultra sound which has shown i have some small cysts but the doctor is not worried too much by them as evrything else looks normal. Doctor has said i can now choose between waiting to see if i start to ovulate naturally (oestrogen levels low and testosterone high!) or he could start me on clomid.
Loads of questions about what to do. What are the risks of taking clomid? side effects? chances of ovulation starting again naturally? (came off injection 2 and a half years ago!)
I dont know what to do. Dh and I want another baby but im not too keen on taking drugs as i think clomid has a higher risk of multipal briths doesnt it??? my dad was a twin..would this be a factor????

Have you been given a diagnosis of the underlying problem?.

The multiple small cysts could be a condition called polycystic ovaries. This is very common; around 1 in 5 women have PCO. Also the facts that your oestrogen is low and testosterone is high is another clue.

The cystic follicles associated with PCO do disappear - only to be replaced by further cystic follicles.

Side effects have been reported with clomid namely breast and bowel discomfort. It should only be given for a maximum of six months after which time other treatments should be tried. You should also be monitored whilst on clomid with both blood tests and ultrasounds as it is quite powerful stuff.Multiple pg is a risk whenover ovulation is induced with fertility drugs - in natural conception the risk is about 1 in 80, in induced ovulation around 1 in 20. There is no increased risk of birth defects from fertility drugs.

I would add that if you are not already under the care of a gynae at a subfertility unit you should be.

thanks attila

my doc is referring me to gynea, doctor says he does not think its PCO, this is why i had the scan as it was suspected. Doctor thinks the cysts they found fall in the 'normal' range.
(im just repeating what doctor said as i have no clue really what all this means!)
Doctor said that everything looks normal just that my oestrogen levels are too low in order for me to ovulate and says he will prescribe clomid for this if thats what we want.
