Carry on with Clomid, or go for IUI

I am just pasting one of my posts from another thread, to see what people think.
I have been ttc for 24 months, with unexplained infertility. Bloods indicate I have been ovulating. I'm on my second cycle of Clomid 50mg, but temping indicates I may have a short luteal phase (8days)...

...I have just spoken to AN Other consultant on the phone, who told me that he doesn't hold with prescribing Clomid to people who appear to be ovulating normally, because it is 'dangerous' due to risk of multiple births. I asked if by 'dangerous' he just meant there is a 'danger' of multiple births, or that it is dangerous to my health. he said re. multiple births. My PCT does not 'do' follicle scanning, so he can't book me in.

He said that he thought I should not do 100mg Clomid, but instead go for IUI. I'm not sure what to do now, whether I should see through 3 months of the Clomid 100mg, starting once I have used up my current prescription (after my next cycle), or go for IUI.

I would not want a multiple birth of more than twins, but not keen on getting really interventionist unless really necessary!

Help!! Can anyone offer any advice, or just recount their own experiences of IUI/ Clomid?

Hello, I'm in a similar situation. I have 1 child and have been ttc for 4 years. About 2 yrs ago I tried 6months of clomid with no luck. I have unexplained secondary infertility. I've just had a consulation and we are about to try IUI. Unfortunately its private and the money is a big consideration.

Our doc told us that IUI has a success rate of just 7%. But if you conpare that to a couple with no problems they only ever have a 20% chance in any 1 month (or so i'm told. While i'm doing IUI I will be given clomid, so if you can afford it it might be worth while. I've heard of people who its worked for.
best of luck

Hi,
I cant advise from experience but i can put my two pennys in if its ok.
I have just finished my third course of clomid and have three left at 100mg and IUI will be next for me if unsuccessfull. If i was in ur shoes i would go for the next three months of clomid, i know exactly where ur coming from not wanting anything invasive unless u have to, so fingers crossed you wont have to if you give clomid that extra chance. I have raised fsh and underactive thyroid and one tube potentially blocked but otherwise blood tests have shown me to be ovulating, each consultant and area seem to have very different ideas so dont worry about not being monitored, im not being monitored as i dont have pcos and am known to be ovulating. I had a giant long chat to the fertility nurse at the hospital on friday, and she confirmed that there is no need for me to be monitored and that clomid ensures ovulation on every cycly as naturally we only ovulate less than half the time. How the hell do people fall accidentally pregnant, thats what Id like to know!!!!! Anyhow sorry for going on, i must be in the mood, hope something in my ramble helps. x

Thanks for responding, Viksam and Mrs Fossil - I have been away for a few days, so I have only just read the thread.

I am still in a bit of a quandary about all this, for two reasons...first of all, I have just been thinking...sod it! let's go straight for IUI, as I am not getting any younger, and I would like to have more than one child, so don't want to wait much longer for the first pregnancy.

Secondly, I have been having very 'twinge-y' ovaries this month, and I think my day 21 progesteron was 120+, which seems quite high, so I am concerned about OHSS, although not yet to the point where I feel the need to go to the GP.

Anyone else in a similar position?
