Temping Question

I'm new to temping - have been doing it a few months but most months have been very straight forward with an obvious temp shift for 10-14 days followed by a drop so I have understood them however, this month I had a temp shift for a couple of days but then 2 low temps (both on mornings after I'd had some alcohol and not necessarily slept properly) - my temp has now risen again this morning.. Do you think I ovulated the first time and these 2 low temps are anomolies or do you think I ovulated the second time.. mmm - I'm confused now..

I'm only asking as there was plenty of bding before the first rise but we were having a rest before the second rise.. and I don't want to get my hopes up if there is no reason to..

Alcohol usually makes your temperature rise the next morning, so it wouldn't be that. I would have said that if you had some alcohol the day before the first shift, that could have been due to the booze and then it went back down to normal - or you could have just had a fever (or woken up later). I'm not sure what would cause a drop in temperature if you had ovulated already - possibly lack of sleep, as you are also supposed to have at least 3 hours of sleep in a row before taking temp, or if you took your temp earlier than usual in the morning. Or just measuring it incorrectly. It's hard to tell really, until you reach the end of your cycle and measure the length of your luteal phase which should stay the same in each cycle.

Thanks pinkpeony - everything I have read has only told me what would cause a false high rather than a false low so I guess I just ovulated later than I though I was hoping that maybe someone had heard about false lows..

Does that mean that you only get your real basal body temperature i.e. the lowest temperature possible first thing in the morning? Is it high the rest of the day?

can I hijack and ask another question on this thread?
Does the temp count if your DH is giving you a big cuddle in bed so you're feeling a bit hotter than normal? (and i mean 'hotter' in a sweaty way, not a sexy way )

I don't know what could cause false lows - maybe taking temperature earlier than usual, illness, stress, or just taking it incorrectly? Did you check for any other fertility signs, i.e. position of cervix or presence of EWCM? That should help confirm when you ovulated.

Don't check cervical position but EWCM was around before the first rise which was what made me sure I had ovulated.. but once I got the 2 lows I got confused.. I've heard of something stopping ovulation and then you body just gears up to do it again a few days later.. I guess there is no point second guessing I'll just have to wait for AF to arrive..

Thanks for you help pinkpeony
