It depends on the type of scan.
Internal ultrasound - bit awkward but painless
HSG ( I think - where they inject dye into your tunes to check for blockages) - uncomfortable for most (I found it painful but I had a reaction to they dye)

Hi, I've had a few internal scans for fertility issues and hen in the epu. They really are nothing to be worried about, a wee but uncomfortable but not at all sore.
I hope everything goes well.

I had a scan of my ovaries and womb recently and it was nothing. I was close to ovulation so I took preseed lube so there wasn't any ky up there to kill the sperm Blush luckily the nurse didn't bat an eyelid! The nurse was extremely accommodating for me as I have problems opening my legs wide in certain positions (smears are a nightmare) but she managed. She was extremely professional and talked us through everything she could see on the screen (and we could see too as there were two screens).
The wand they use is doesn't cause any pain. It wasn't even uncomfortable really, although there was one bit that she pushed on to look at an ovary and that hurt, but that was just me. I still don't know why one side hurt and the other didn't.
I felt quite relieved after the scan as I could see I was ovulating and everything looked normal.

Hi my husband and I are currently at the early stages of fertility tests. Whilst at the fertility clinic the other day (for hubby to give his sample) I had a horrible feeling come over me. What if there is something wrong with either of us? How will we feel? What will we do? I see that you have had to have scans done, I was wondering how you cope with the unknown and uncertainty of having your own baby.

I have had both internal ultrasounds and the Hsg test.

Ultrasounds is like a dildo with a condom on being inserted. No pain and not even uncomfortable.

Hsg I found pretty horrendous. Others said it was mild cramping and uncomfortable. Speculum goes in like a smear test, what was manageable. Then they thread a tube through your cervix which I didn't feel at all. However when they inject the dye your whole stomach and uterus contract and it's like no pain I've ever felt. Was intense and horrible but only lasted 30 seconds and then it was all done. Would do it again in a heartbeat if it helped me create my little one.

I've had 9 internal scans and they've all been painless. If you tense up, it will be uncomfortable but it isn't painful at all. Good luck x
