Conception

How reliable is a first response test at 5 days before period?

I got a BFN yesterday evening. Period is due on Friday. I know they are less reliable the earlier they are used but wondered how many had had BFN followed by BFPs a bit later?

I'd wait and try again

Before af was due I had bfns but not on Frer

I think I got a bfp on Frer around the day af was due but it was still very faint

No matter what tests I used I never got a BFP with all three of my pregnancies until I was a day or two late.

How many DPO are you? I got a very pale positive 12 days DPO and that was with twins.

A lot of women get BFN's from testing early and then go on to get BFP's. It's a very hard 2 weeks wait but definitely wait until at lest the day of your due period. Even then, you could possibly still get a BFN if the HCG hasn't built up yet so test every couple of days if your period doesn't arrive.

Honestly testing early is pointless because you most likely won't believe it anyway and tell yourself it's because you're testing too early (which could well be or not be the case). It won't put your mind at rest and you'll need to test again later anyway.

I know some ladies have had relatively early BFP's but from what I hear they were mostly twin pregnancies!

Good luckFlowers

Yesterday was 9 days DPO I think and today is 10 DPO. Too early? I have sore/itchy nipples and mild nausea the other day but that's it. Really can't face another BFN.

thanks all. I know I shouldn't have done but thought I would give it a go with First Response as it says it can be used from 6 days before your period is due. Period is due on Friday.

I never have had a positive until 13 days DPO. I don't know many people who have had positives before 12. The test companies market early tests knowing it's a money pit as desperate women will test day after day from 9 dpo. It is very irresponsible of them.

Don't test early is my advice. Even if you were to get a BfP it might not stick. Lots of women now know of miscarriages that they would never have been aware of before because it's normal to conceive and your body to reject a faulty embryo in the first few days. Early testing sets you up for heartache and debt!

Both pregnancies I tested positive five days before my period was due with clearblue digital. I think they're amazingly accurate!

Both times I just had no sense of pmt or period on the way, and second time round I had weird back pain and without realising it went on a mission to find love heart sweets - so I though uh-ohh.... I ate chalky sweets like crazy when pregnant! So I had a spare test and yup, was pregnant!

Thanks all. I wasn't going to test until I was a day late then read lots of threads on here about early testing and thought I would try. Total waste of money! I do think though that a BFN result at 5 days before period, although only 78% reliable, makes it less likely that I am pregnant.

Just annoying that I feel like I do have symptoms. Boobs are definitely getting shooting pains though them and have v mild nausea. I never usually get painful boobs. Must be in my head.

I don't think it means your not...implantation can take from 6-10 days and okay then will your body produce hCG which will only be detected after a few days - even with the early ones!! Don't give up!

Hang in there. I totally believe in very early symptoms. I conceived on 18th December, on Christmas Day I felt awful after alcohol, and that continued. We flew to the US on Boxing Day and I couldn't stomach booze at all, and from the 27th my nipples started doing weird things, then my boobs started hurting. I tested positive on the 30th because I thought I'd better test before I went all out for NYE. Nausea didn't start until 7w, ironically the day after I found out I was carrying twins.

Thanks all. Am still getting shooting pains in my boobs and tummy feels all swollen although I think I may have a slight tummy bug which could be causing it. I am tempted to test again today. Period is due on Friday so I am 11 DPOs. Still too early to test?

So annoying as I have been pregnant twice before with DSs but cannot recall if I had any symptoms at this stage. I know that with DS2 I wasn't aware of any symptoms until one morning when I must have been around 4 weeks when it dawned on me that I was getting up early to wee a lot, so I did a test which was positive. Other than that, no signs. And with DS1 I don't think I had any signs at all other than being overly emotional but I'm usually like that anyway with PMT.

Urggh, got period today, 2 days early. Can't help it but I am devastated. Sixth cycle and nothing. I have a feeling it's never going to happen. Is it too soon to try IVF? I am 40 in July.

Candy crush, don't give up!! I'm 40
too and trying for no 3. Just started to try and of course I'm fertile now and DH is ill so reckon month 1 of trying ain't going to happen! We tried for 6mths with my second son despite it happening v quickly for first son so don't give up hope. I remember all too well the devastation every month when AF arrived. When we were trying for no 2 after 4 months we went to see IVF specialist as I was 38 and knew time wasn't on my side. They said taking up to a year was quite normal. Both of us got tested and we were both fine so think it is obviously down to chance. Anyway, just wanted to say try not to panic and hopefully you will get your BFP soon x

Oooh, thanks you newbie6, that is just what I wanted to hear! I spoke to a few other mums friends at the weekend who also said it took a lot longer to conceive at 40/41 but that it DID happen. I am still dreading going through it all again this month. Am on CD6 and not sure whether to bother with the OPK again as never seems to make a difference. Guess we have to do it by the book. I was even going to try to track my temperature this month and to keep a diary. I also registered with the ARGC clinic just in case although I really don't want to go down that route. Good luck with TTC! Let me know how it goes!

Thanks Candycrush, my DH has bronchitis (feeling slightly bad that I was being horrid to him as I just thought he had man flu)....anyway means we haven't DTD so this month is out 😢 Anyway....I use the OPK, did for both pregnancies but didn't temp, think that may just push me over the edge into borderline OCD! Stupidly saying if this 3rd one happens it will be lovely but I already know that I'm now a mission, arrrggghhhh! Good luck lovely xx
