normal range of BBT?

Hi all

I've recently started charting my temp after a two (different length) cycles of ttc. Google suggests normal pre-ov BBT is 36.1-36.4 degrees. I started charting on day 8 of my cycle, and my BBT has been higher than that since (36.6, but as high as 36.8 one day, although I measured an hour later than normal at 7am). Is this kind of pre-ov temperature normal? I am using a digital thermometer accurate to 0.1 degree. Is this accurate enough or should I get a thermometer accurate to 0.01 degrees?

my last cycle was shorter than usual (24 days) and my period was MUCH lighter than usual, but still definitely a period (2 days of light-medium flow then brown spotting for 5 more days), so I suspect I had a shorter than usual luteal phase, but I wasn't actively charting so don't know exactly when I ov. I took a clear blue preg test last Thursday (9 days after unusual period) to check and it was a BFN so def not pregnant.

Anyone have any words of advice? I suspect I am reading too much into a thermometer that isn't precise enough so if I need to get a grip (and a better thermometer) please tell me!

Thanks

Hi Marmite

You do need to get a thermometer with two decimal places, it's far more accurate and doesn't give you such a rocky chart.

That being said, 36.6 is more like my post ovulation temps... It's possible your thermometer is faulty?

Temps remain high if you're pregnant so along with your abnormal AF perhaps it's worth doing another test just in case?

Good luck and let me know the outcome. X

thanks for the reply sammy. I think I'll get a new thermometer and check if that might be the issue. will try not to POAS if I can help it as BFN are so depressing... but if my new thermometer confirms high temps maybe I will test again Hmm

I've been temping for 4 months now and my pre-ov temps are consistently quite high. My coverline is usually around 36.60 - 36.70 and there is a jump after ovulation to between 37.0 and 37.20. I was a bit worried about this at first but think this is just the norm for me. I still have a definite pattern and can clearly see when I ovulate.

I do also notice the difference in temp if I take it a bit later or if I have had any alcohol the night before. I would say don't panic too much because until you get to see a couple of months then you wont know what the norm is for you. Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Weschler is great for answering questions if you havent read it already.

Hope that helps x
