A friend has just retd from Kiev where she has become pregnant with ivf, could not afford the treatment here. She is taking progesterone injections to sustain the pregnancy which may be triplets! She has phoned me tonight in a state as she is having a reaction to the injections, big itchy swellings all over her body. Her local gp knows nothing about ivf, she lives as far away as you can imagine, the Isle of Barra. She has tried to contact Kiev but nobody has replied. Her gp told her to stop them, I said she shouldnt, but must get urgent advice. Anyone else been thru this? With my triplet ivf pregnancy I had hrt patches, they made me a little sore but nothing like my friend is describing,

Localised redness and swelling can be a normal reaction for some people to any type of injection. Are the swellings at the injection sites? I'm assuming she's been injecting in various sites.

I had the projesterone pessaries which made me feel awful but I don't recall having a rash at all. Is there a local fertility clinic she could ring for advice? When is she due to do the next one? How far along is she?

They have confirmed the pregnancy and she goes for a scan in two weeks time, I have just been looking it up on here and a reaction seems quite common, even using pessaries, she is in a lot of pain though.

From the rash you mean? I'd talk to the nearest clinic she can find, there should be a fertility nurse on call. I'd want to get checked out if it were me tbh. Hope she's ok.

It is the swelling that is causing so much pain, but I have just read loads on here and it seems to be very common, and does not affect the pregnancy. It says that the progesterone is mixed with oil and it can be the oil causing the reaction, they use sesame or olive oil!

maybe she could take antihistamine (sp), not sure though. Hope it calms down and she sails throught the pregnancy Smile

sorry to high jack this thread but I'm using progesterone pessarys (cyclogest) at the minute - is 4th time having IVF - and have very sore and very very veiny breasts. Have not had this side effect before and is freaking me out as am sure is just side effects rather than pregnancy but can't help hoping. Has anyone else on cyclogest experienced this...
I hope your friend is ok Triplets - all sounds very stressful after an already stressful procedure
