Bit of history; diagnosed with PCOS 4 years ago, conceived dd after just over 2 years of TTC. No medication, she was a pure fluke.

Been TTC again since March 09 so about 18 months with no success, cycles have ranged from 30 days to 168 days Shock, pretty sure no ovulation.

Was prescribed Metformin about 4 months ago to help with PCOS symptoms (hirutism etc), not overly successful yet but guess these things take time.

When I saw my GP just before christmas he said he would consider prescribing Clomid if I'd had no luck conceiving after a year. Going back to see him tomorrow to see if he will prescribe it off his own back without involving the hospital (had bad experiences with ob/gyn hospital last time and will not go through that again :()

So... If he says I should try it, what should I expect? I've done lots of reading but would like some real experiences.

I'll be on cd10 tomorrow so guessing I'd have to wait until the next cycle but that will probably be next year now??

How bad are the side effects

And of course..does it work??

I'm about to start taking clomid again. I took 50mg for 3 cycles, got pg on third cycle then had mc. The consultant is putting me on 100mg for 3 more cycles and I'll be monitored for the first cycle. We had to have various tests before I was even prescribed clomid and it's important to be scanned so they can make sure it's working and you're ovulating (dose can be adjusted if not) and that your ovaries aren't being overstimulated. I don't know if your GP can prescribe it but I'm happy with my decision to be treated at a specialist unit by someone with expertise on pcos.

Hope that helps a bit, I'm happy to answer more ques

Thanks for the reply,

Firstly sorry to hear about your mc, fingers crossed things work out for you this time around.

When I was under the hospital care I had an internal scan that showed it was definitely PCOS, but after that they kept cancelling/postponing appointments and when we were seen they were very rude so I'm very reluctant to get back into that, especially with a 2.5 year old with me too.

I've heard that when it's prescribed by GP you have blood tests at CD21 to check the LH/FSH levels, but I don't know.

I didn't realise that about the blood tests. When I was monitored at the hospital I had scans (I think) on cd9 and cd14 and then a blood test on cd21. Before I started the clomid I had to have various tests plus dh had a sperm test. My experience at the hospital has been great but that's because we've had to go private. My nhs treatment at the same hospital wasn't as good.

Hi, you have the right to go to a different hospital, if you think that would help!
