Solid poos with Gaviscon

My three month dd has been given Gaviscon for reflux. The reflux is better but her poos are solid and she goes bright red and extremely grunty passing them. Has anyone else found this, she's not dehydrated but I wondered if it's temporary whilst her gut adjusts or to expect it to continue. It's not what I'd expect to see in a baby nappy.

archie gaviscon does this to their poos unfortunately so it will continue. You could speak to your GP about lowering the dose slightly to find the least amount you can get away with.

My DS was on gaviscon and I stopped using it because of that very reason (although if I diluted it with a bit more water, it wasn't so bad). The GP prescribed ranitidine and domperidone instead (first one reduces acid, second one helps the body digest food faster so less vomit).

It has made her vomiting 100% better and she doesn't have any other symptoms apart from a cough which I'm hoping will clear up now she's being treated.I don't really want her to have anything else as DS had pretty bad reflux this is mild by comparison. I'll try using half a sachet as I feel really sorry for her straining away...

You could try upping the amount of water you dissolve in? Say an extra 5ml?

Thanks Iggly I'll try that. Did your DS get constipated?

Yes he did and had the horrible straining. He didn't go for a day or two so I stopped the gavsicon and he went again. I watered it down a little which helped.

But the gaviscon wasn't great anyway (DS has silent reflux as well) so we moved onto other medication instead.

I always used half the recommended dose for my DS and it seemed to work just as well, plus it stopped the grunty nightmare poo situation. Maybe just reduce the dose and see how it goes??

My ds was exactly the same, he never got used to it. But it wasn't constipation, just solid (like plasticine) poos. He used to pass them with red faced grunting too but they didn't seem too difficult to expel, so we just went with it. We came off gaviscon at 6.5m after weaning, and the poos went back to normal.

Good luck
