DS (3.9) had a hearing test today and it didn't go well. I'm shocked and upset!

His speech is still a bit unclear, so I asked for a referral to a speech therapist. We were given an appt for a hearing test, prior to being booked in for speech therapy, and tbh I thought it was just a formality. However, it seems that his hearing isn't great, and that there might be fluid behind his eardrums.

I'm fairly confident that it will be something treatable (like glue ear...although he has never had an ear infection; don't they usually go hand in hand?), but I am feeling really terrible for not spotting it myself earlier. I thought he had a bit of "selective hearing", and have often been snappy with him when I've repeated myself for the umpteenth time ("DS, get your shoes on..... Shoes on!.... WILL YOU PLEASE GET YOUR SHOES ON!!" etc).

It was so heartbreaking watching him struggle in the test, and it seemed so bloody obvious with the things the audiologist was doing. I feel like a schmuck. Poor DS

I am sorry that you have been through this, my ds is profoundly deaf and i know how awful the hearing tests can be,,,,,,,, Hope you have a positive outcome!

Yes, they're going to bring him back in for another test in about three months. I guess that's to see if the congestion goes away and if that helps the hearing. It seems like a long wait though.

I still can't believe I didn't pick up on it myself though.

Keep on at them and make sure they do, my ds slipped through the net because they forgot to send an appointment and his deafness wasnt found till he was two and a quarter!

If DS is developing language, then his hearing can't be awful (I say this as a mother of a profoundly deaf child that we didn't pick up until she was over a year old). I think you need to go back sooner, 3 months is a long time, without them telling you what is going on. Did they stick anything in DS's ears to see how well his eardrum is working and/or use headphones. I think you need more answers and sooner. there's not much point in focusing on SLT until you know what DS is hearing. Did they give you a chart of what he can hear ?
